I first want to say I have found this website the most helpful website for homerecording tips and ideas, thank god it exists. My question is which condenser mic and preamp with phantom power would best work with the MR8 under 200 dollars. I have heard and read that the Studio Projects B-1 is a good condenser mic but for the preamp I am clueless. Any suggestions, THanks

The berry UB series mixers have some of the best rated pre amps in the low price range. I've heard a Studio Projects B-1 and a MXL 990 (I think that is the right #). I will probably be buying one of the two myself.
I have been using a Shure beta 58a and have heard recordings (vocals) done with other dynamic mics and they do a great job also. I'm sure that since most people use condensers for recording they are probably the best kind of mic to use, but don't discount some of those dynamics either.

i use an Octava MK-319 with a Bellari MP105 tube pre amp. I think I scored both at Guitar center together for under 200.00 (of course I had to spend another 50.00 on a shock mount and pop filter). As musicians are we always overbudget?

SP B1 and Behringer Pre...

I've been using a pair of B1's with a Behringer UltraGain 2200. VERY QUIET, VERY CLEAN, VERY NEUTRAL... This is going into a VF80, not a MR8, but I don't think that matters... There are also preamps by ART and Presonus. But the B1's are a great way to go regardless.

If you can get that $119 deal on the M-Audio DMP-3 at Guitar Center I'd say go there NOW and pick one up! Check out the threads about how to get this price in the "Rack" forum. I use a DMP-3 and can assure you that it's unbelievable for the price. I'm also using an MR-8.

With the remaining $80 I'd say get either a Studio Projects B1 or a Marshall (MXL) v67g. Both can be found brand new for that price. The B1 you can just get on 8thstreet.com, but if you want the MXL mic for around $80 you'll have to play the eBay game. Otherwise they're $99 new on 8thstreet, among other places. The B1 is more versatile; it's good for vocals, acoustic guitar, drum micing, etc. The v67g really shines on vocals, in my opinion, especially male vocals, although some say they love it on guitar too.
