I am outfitting a home studio which will be used strictly as a hobby--no $-making involved. So my mic question is this: Is there a decent condenser mic on the market for my situation at $300? I'm currently using a Shure Beta 58A dynamic.

Check this web site out................. :)

A Studio Projects B-1 Is a great condenser for only $100. It beats out a lot of condensers in it's price range, and it's super good for a low price.

If I were only allowed 1 mic for around $300 it would be either an SM7 or a CAD M179

What are you recording?

exactly...are you just gonna be doing vocals or instruments...or both???? if you want to do both...maybe you can get 2 mics for $300.

More info...

The mic will be used as follows: 95% vocals, an occasional acoustic guitar.

You are best off with the studio projects C1. a very versatile mic.

AT4033 might be a good start. CAD M179 probably would get the job done. Try a ribbon www.shinybox.com they can sound great. Do you want a different sound then your Beta? Or just "better"?

AT4033 good
NT1a I like this mic a lot w dbx 286a
V67i not bad

Both the CAD M9 Tube mic and the sE Electronics SE2200-A go for $299.
Both are very good mics especially for $299
The CAD is a bit brighter.
The SE2200-A is smoother.
The CAD has a pretty good rep on a number of forums as a beginner tube mic.
The SE2200-A has won quite a few awards and I've tested it against the Neuman U87 and found that they share some similar tonal characteristics.
Tough choice nonetheless.
