purely personal opinion . . . and while my desert island (with some magical power source) island mic might well be AKG C414 (though there are specific U67FET's that might beat out specific C414's) suggestion here is to second
...
there are u67fets?
(if there are, that is awesome. wouldn't a u67fet basically be a u87ai? did you possibly mean a u47fet? if not, a new mic to lust after :))
also with 414's there are so many different versions-- which are you referring to? these also vary greatly in price from the original brass c-12 capsule with transformers to the current models. i've had minimal experience with any version, but i know opinions vary greatly on the different versions, with the c-12 versions being somewhat coveted mics.
i'd also just toss the oktavamod mk-219 pe into the ring. you could probably buy a used mk-219 for <$100 and then get it modded for $250, or buy a new one for a little over $400-- that's a great all around mic imho and while flattering on many sources, it is certainly is not hyped in its response.

I decided to go with an Audio Technica AT4040 and just got it today. It is amazing how much better it sounds with my voice. I will probably try out more mics to see, but this works way better for me.

Ooh - I didn't mean to imply that this was a bad thing. I just wanted the OP to understand that performing a search would yield a specific subset of microphones - not just a million individual suggestions, which would basically render the search useless :)

I knew what you meant... I was just reinforcing it. :)

I hate 414s personally... I am an AT4050 man myself.... Bud versus Coors. ;)

Hey dgatwood - you used your ribbon on acoustic guitar at all? Im rather excited to try the one I bought out on my acoustic, but it hasn't come yet, and I'm getting ancy :D

No, haven't used it on acoustic to the best of my recollection. I've mostly used them on vocals, brass, other wind instruments, etc.
