I have recorded with standalone units for years, but now I want to get into PC recording. I like the idea of being able to see what I am doing, plus the variables that a PC and software offer. This is my stupid question. What should I get for a PC for recording? I will be using a Black Box for a while, which can be routed by USB. I also thought I might start with N-Track. My main goal is to be able to record bass, guitar, and use some beat software like FL. My budget is around $800. Would it not be wise to buy a Dell off the shelf to get started. I see posts where people stress not to do this and build your own for less $. I also see posts of people successfully using units like the Dell and very happy. What suggestions might you guys have?

Many thanks,

If you feel like building your own, I'd personally suggest it. I built own, and it's great. If you're concerned that it won't be quiet enough, I'd get a Dell...those are some of the quietest computers I've seen. But if you wanna save some money and get nice gear, then I'd build your own.

If you have the least little bit of mechanical aptitude build your own. You want a dual core amd processor, 1gb RAM, two hard drives and a soundcard(don't use the motherboards sound).

I'd suggest building your own. It's getting simpler to do all the time; I just built one, and selecting the parts was far more complicated than putting them all together.
