Computer Upgrade

Within the next couple of days I am going to have my computer upgraded so I can run Cakewalk Sonar 2.2 and Antares Kantos 1.0.

I would appreciate any feedback and suggestions.

On the Cakewalk website they recommend OS 2000 or XP, 1.2GHz, 256 MB

My existing computer has Windows 98SE, 533MHz, 512MB

My plan is to insert 2 additional hard drives (One for recording and one for storage - keeping the original hard drive to run my everyday misc junk). I'm updating my motherboard so I can at least have 1.2GHz. Putting in some RAM (how much?) And a Delta 44 or 66.

I'm wondering should I upgrade my OS? Does it make a difference?

I want to do this right. So price is not really the issue. With that being said I would like to stay within a "reasonable budget".

You have pretty much good machine up there, VOICES. Most of us get WinXP while having a chance to do so.

Because it serves more stability and enhanced features than WIN98. (Hey, it's 2003 anyway... :D ) . For instance, WinXP make a good use of WDM driver, while Win98 only support it partially. Most Win98 user had to stick with MME driver when running their audio applications.

Can you tell me more about WinXP, Jaymz ?

I can't, I'm out of words. But www.musicxp.net can. Go there, and have a time to consider it. IMHO, Win98 and WinXP is like night and day differences.

Actually, SONAR wil run on Win98 just fine. It's just not recomended. They don't guarantee you will run it smooth. That's why they don't give much support on Win98 ~ SONAR users. I believe WinXP unleashed SONAR power more than Win98 will. Anyway, when you say money is not a subject here, why would wait ? Sooner or later you'll have to upgrade it anyway... Just my 2 million dollars :D

Dump 98se,it sucks I upgraded and it was well worth it.Plus you can't run DXI's or input monitoring with 98.
Definitely go with XP,at least you know it will be supported longer than 2000.

At the very least,1.2 is nothing special.I have PIII 933 and it's a choice between input monitoring or softsynths for any real time playing once the track count goes up.
 
1.2ghz motherboard/cpu combos are really, really cheap now.

i've had an athlon 1.2ghz running on an abit motherboard for a while now using win2k on my desktop and winXP on my laptop. both work great.

i'm upgrading my desktop soon to a 2.6ghz now that the 3.0 and above are out.
 
In Norway (and this is an expensive country), a AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz only costs around $35...

That's cheap! Even in Norway! :D
 
The way things develop with computers I would say that every two years you should consider upgrading your Processor. Computer-wise I went from a Tandy 8kb little thing when I was about 7 to the Commodore 64 when I was around 11 to an IBM with a 386 processor and Win 3.1 when I was around 18 to a PI 133mhz and win 95 when I was 20, a PII 400mhz when I was 22, a PIII 866mhz with Win 2k when I was 23 and finally a PIV 1.6 GHZ when I was 24. I'm 26 now and am considering upgrading to a 2.0 GHZ dual processor if possible (when I get enough cash to do so). I just think that you have to be on the edge, ALWAYS!!

It sounds like I should upgrade my OS to WinXP, get at least a 2.0 GHz.
However, any suggestions on how much RAM I should get?
 
I would consider 512 MB as a minimum. Get 1 gig RAM if you can. :)
 
i agree with Moskus. i've got 512mb now with my 1.2ghz.

you must be my doppleganger my upgrade path is almost identical. did you have the tape drive (cassette) for your C-64?

Nah I didn't have the cassette drive for the C 64 however I did have it for the little Tandy micro computer... I used to play "breakout" and a ping pong game on it, programmed with Basic. Those games were a blast, and I even did my own "games" where I asked a Q, and given a Y or N answer I drew a little image kind of like:

That was really fun, I used to program these and then have my parents play the game... later on (when I was like 9) I did porn versions for my friends :D

I've used C & Pascal (Delphi) before, but never heard Bais programing language at all :p :D I'd be glad if next generation of CAL* will be based on C language !!!
