I've looked around...

Seems Intel chipset is the better.

any probl. w/ PIV 1.7 Ghz, 60 gig ide hard drive, 512 SDRam.

Looking at Sony Vaio, a Compaq, and a HP!

Any certain chipsets to avoid or Ram type for recording.

I'll probably be going the 16 bit route. 8 tracks will do me fine!

And I'll probably start with n-Tracks to get my feet wet, an Echo Mia s/c or Delta-44, a lower end mixer and compressor/gate (probably Behringer) 1 or 2 CAD M-37s and a Shure 58 for mics.

Recording acoustic guitar and vocals.
 
head's up!

Just a warning... I have a Sony Viao that is causing me grief right now, and it all started when I installed Audiophile Delta drivers. I'm not posetive the Audiophile drivers hozed me, but the timing is suspicious. It was working pretty well with the Mia card though.

One thing I would highly recommend is that you get a second HD for your digital recordings. This will prevent 90% of potential headaches from "skipping" or "crackling" which are common troubles for PC DAWs.

Better is an odd term. Performance wise the 266a chipset is just as good. Pricewise AMD processors are cheaper. And by the looks of it, both will run stably on a DAW.

Shazukura, I noticed your post earlier.

Kinda scared me, cause I was looking at a Vaio, and installing an Echo Mia or a Delta-44.

But I do hope to have 2 hard drives.

Forgibe the ignorance, but what is DAW. I've seen the acronym a hundred times but can't deduce "exactly" what it stands for!

I suggest you to build a custom system this is what I have now and it runs pretty well...
