You never answered my question: What's the latency on your soundcard set to?

Another thing that just occured to me... it's possible that one of the plugins that you're using is suffering from the P4 denormal issues. Delays and reverbs are usually the worst offenders.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Noisewreck, my latency is set to "Very Low". With the MobilPre you have Very Low, Low, Medium, High, Very High.
On Cubase Input Latency is 4.626ms, Output is 5.624ms.
I'm using the M-Audio ASIO driver that came with the MobilePre.

Here is a shot of what it looks like:
ScreenShotPerf.jpg

The top Running Processes are:
Cubasesx.exe 122,424K
svchost.exe 23,668K
Rtvscan.exe 22,804K
svchost.exe 19,060K

Breakdown of the sequence:
14 tracks
1 Send Fx: Sonitus Reverb. Most or all of the tracks have this send.
3 Inserts - Compression on Bass, Vox1, Vox2
EQ 1 track - Vox

Pretty simple.

Thanks for your help.

First off, you should never have virus scanning enabled when you are running audio apps. RTVScan could be a culprit here.

Some important performance related points -
1. Set processor scheduling to "background services" - very important for ASIO (Cubase)
2. Don't run real-time anti-virus
3. Don't run MS Office
4. Audio needs its own hard drive, not just partition, but its own hard drive
5. Reverb and delay should nearly always be send effects

Most of this has already been mentioned. Least important here with regards to CPU usage, might be points 3 & 4, but doing otherwise can result in glitches.

Try jacking up the latency. Cubase needs to pump as much audio out to the sound card as it can before windows passes control to another thread or process.

Whether or not it is going to help free up CPU resources for cubase, I don't know. It depends on how cubase is figuring CPU usage and I don't know the internal workings of the software.

If that doesn't work, disabling the anti-virus should free up more CPU time for Cubase. Real time anti-virus stuff is MURDER. I've seen so many computers slow to a crawl with this stuff on. I'm guessing this is the most likely culprit.

Also other things that eat up CPU time besides the stuff that was already mentioned are Themes, Active desktop, and pretty much anything else that is designed to make the screen look flashy and cool.

Hmmm, yeah, there isn't that much going to cause your CPU to jump to 90%.

The advice is here in all those posts.

1. Don't run AV software when working in audio

2. Set processor scheduling to "background services": to do this in Windoze XP do the following:
a. Right-click on My Computer and go to Properties.
b. Click on the Advanced tab and click on the Settings button in "Performance".
c. Click on Advanced tab, and select "Background services" radio button instead of "Programs". Click OK.

3. Increase latency, try Low and Medium and see if there is a difference. Sonitus is a high quality reverb, so it may be processor intensive, although, I suspect if you do points 1 and 2 you should see some improvement.

Ladies and gentlemen (Even though I think its only the latter)...

First off you guys are great. Thanks for the constant feedback.

I have fixed the problem (temporarily at least I think)....

Here's what I did:
1. Unistall the soundcard (to access the song without having the computer freeze 10 seconds after opening that project)
2. Take out ALL the sends and inserts in the tracks
3. ***Save under a different name****
4. Re-install drivers
5. Open NEW version
6. Levels back down to 15-25%

The old version still freezes up ridiculously... It's an enigma to me right now. If someone can decipher (sp) it please let me know.

That's great news Alexrkstr :) One question, on point 6, have you loaded your insert and send FX back or is this still w/o FX? The only thing I can think of at this point is that something has gotten corrupt in the original file.

Yeah... I skipped a step
5. Open NEW version
6. Levels at 5-10%
6. Add Sends and Fx
7. Levels back down to 15-25%

Here's a funny thing though.... If I leave the computer idle (say I'm playing my guitar) with thta project open, the CPU starts to clib a little to 40%. Is that weird? Then when I go to record and hit play/record the levels come back down...

i used to occasionally have a corruption like this in my cubase and sometimes FruityLoops filez.... theres a chance that your HD could be writing errors ....(might consider if it starts happening more frequently)

the idle thing isnt so weird... i also notice mine doing that

glad you got it worked out.

I've seen this happen with one of the delay plugins I've got... don't remember which one. This can happen if the plugin isn't handling denormal issues properly. These kinds of denormal issues are common to all digital processors not just P4 BTW... there is a lengthy explanation for this, which I don't think is necessary to go into in this thread. Suffice it to say that this can happen with delays, reverbs and IIR filters. In any case, if the CPU utilisation goes down once you start playback, the you don't really need to worry about this.
