the cakewalk manual said that i should be able to record any sound my computer is playing by sending from the headphone jack of my computer speakers to the line in on the sound card, but this is not working.

i'm trying to recording sound from what's playing on my dvd-rom drive...but i've also failed to record sound from audio cd's.

any help would be appreciated.

That's a poor way to do it. Much better is to use the Windows mixer (or the mixer that came with your sound card) to select the source to record from. In this case, select the CD Audio input.

The best way to record audio from a CD is to extract the Wave files directly using a program meant for that. Not only is this a lot faster than having to wait for the audio to play, it's also potentially cleaner since the audio doesn't have to pass through the sound card.
