....this might be a little off topic, but maybe one of you more knowledgeable folks have heard of this before. I went to start my computer last night, and all that happened was the fans started up, the hard drive started running, but nothing else happened. The monitor didn't come on ( Iswapped it for another to make sure it wasn't the problem) The IBM logo at startup isn't there, nothing loads. What's the most likely problem here? Is it my cpu, or could it be something else?

Does it make any beeping noises?

No, it doesn't make any noises at all. It sounds as if ir's running normally, (fans and drives) but absolutely nothing else happens.

Its an IBM running 475 mhz AMD K6 if that helps.

sounds like a graphics card issue
swap it out for a new one

and make sure you update your drivers every once and awhile

.....one more thing that might be relevant. It did start once. I fiddled around for a while and after about a hundred attempts, it started normally and ran fine. This has happened only once. After that time, I turned it off, and it has not booted up since. Could something be loose?

I had this problem where everything seemed to be working, but just no picture on my screen, found out it was my graphics card, hence no picture. Try fitting another to see if that sorts it out.

...I'll try that....but I wonder...would a faulty graphics card prevent windows from loading? Normally, you can hear the hard drive working for about a minute will the OS loads. In this case, there is no apparent loading going on. The drive just spins quietly.

no, it probably wouldn't prevent it from loading (although, who knows...i've never been able to see if it does, 'cause that requires a graphics card for me to do that).

but i'd start with something simple like the card...then hopefully that's all you have to replace. go find a computer you can borrow one from just to test.

Sounds like you got a bad alternator. Or starter. :D

Seriously, just do as everyone else says, re-seat the AGP. Actually, I'd disconnect everything; all drives, sound card, AGP, and RAM. fire it up without everything, and see if it gives you system beeps along the way. It's easier to troubleshoot the less crap you have hooked up. K.I.S.S.

It might be easier to re-load the windows operating system, the last time that happened to me it was a virus in my comp! it got past all my protection.

when I re-loaded windows xp everything was fine.

Kinda tough to do without seeing anything. ;)

I actually did try to reload the OS at one point, but although the CDROM seemed to start spinning, nothing happened...and, yeah, even if it had I wouldn't know. I'm starting to think something must be loose and not making contact. The fact that it did start that one time in the middle of this whole episode suggests that the CPU isn't fried. I can't see it resurrecting itself for one last session...the musics not that good

1st thing to check is the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

If it's dead or near-dead you wont get a boot.

Only costs $3 to put in a new one....

I had thois problem once, and I just had to change the order of my ram sticks.

Give it a shot, should take all of what, 2 minutes?

System Beeps

If it was a graphics card or memory the motherboard would still give a bios post beep. the ONLY things that will cause it to NOT beep at all is if the motherboard is shorted to the case (mine does this on a regular basis and I just flex the board to move it a little and all is well again)

Other than that I would look at the power to the motherboard itself (are the board fans all spinning?)

if not the power supply/connection to the MB could be the cause.

After that you're looking at the CPU but I seriously doubt it's that.

...well, there is definitely no beep. I did try moving the RAM around and changing the battery, with no results. I will check out the board touching the case next!
