I have been recording some songs on my computer for the last few years using an HP 600mhz computer/ Pro Audio 9/ stock soundcard that came with the computer/ Behr Mixer/ Various mics ie Sure SM58, Oktiva MK319, CM88's. I'v gotten pretty good results considering the stock sound card and a limited budget. As i look through my latest MF catalog, I see that the small digital recorders are getting cheaper. Actually i was looking at the Fostex MR8 and wondering just how much better my recordings would be with one of these units. Would I plug this into my computer? Would i still need my mixer? The unit doesn't have a cd burner on it , so i guess i would be able to still use my current burner on right? I guess my real question is, would I get a whole lot better fidelity on my recordings than I get with the computer based system that i now use? I'm mostly recording rock music ie Drums, and guitars. Thanks .

Don't waste your money buying a digital recorder when you already have a perfectly good one that you know how to use and is FAR more flexible! (your current PC)

I would spend the money on a better soundcard... There's tons of cards with many different features out there that can give you professional results at affordable prices. Another area to look at to improve your recordings is to get a quality outboard preamp, or possible an outboard A/D converter... maybe even a better mic/ mics, or even upgrade to Sonar 2.2... I just think it would be silly to go out and buy a digital recorder when you already have a perfectly good one. Examine what can really improve your sound! Take a good look at that front end and keep learning/ practicing!
