Computer Recording Question

With NTrack and an Audiophile 2496, I'm recording an electric keyboard lined into a mixer with good results. Then, I mic up my drums and record a 2nd track. On playback, the drum track is much quiter than the keyboard. I can easily adjust the volume of either track to bring them in line but I'm wondering why the drum track is so much quiter. I'm keeping my Vumeters just below the red so it looks like I'm recording hot enough.

Any suggestions?
 
Not sure if I remember the exact location (I'm at work now, so can't even check) but n-track reduces individual track volumes by 3dB as tracks are added, to ensure no clipping in final mixdown.

You may need to switch this off under 'preferences' of n-Track. Sorry couldn't tell you exactly where, poke around a bit you should find it.
 
Keyboard lines are much louder than mic signals. If you're recording from a mixer to the PC's Line in, are your mixer's track and master volumes up to where they should be?
 
Your keyboard is always gonna be at a fairly consistent level (hot)... but your drums will fluctuate. (i.e. a hard cymbal hit verses a soft high-hat/snare accent). So your drums may peak at -2 or so,.. but that doesn't mean they're always at -2. They'll prolly be sitting around -10/-15 most of the time, which is why they sound "quieter"... you may need more compression to bring the quieter drum parts up more in the mix.

but that's just my ignorant take on it... :p
