How much RAM for a standalone Computer, just for recording?

it totally depends upon the recording application's system requirements......
it should tell you on the box but, there is no such thing as "too much" RAM....

answers

ram - 512mb should do most audio applications unless the programmers were lazy.
multitrack software (per other post) to try....all demoes are at
hitsquad.com
free - audacity, quartz free (4 tracks only),muzys (you have to buy computer music mag)
paid (under 100 bucks) ....powertracks (superb audio/midi) plus magix audio studio which i use, n track(bit lighter on midi),
also superb traktion, and multitrackstudio.com(HIGH STABILITY)
there are also many free midi sequencers on the net. also lots of free / small fee audio editors like cool edit 96, goldwave,
and many others.
just make sure you get a good sound card like an audiophile with a 2ghz computer like an amd athlon with two fast hard drives.
all this if you shop wisely should give you a quite pro set up for under 1K. then audition mics and preamps like the vtb1 or dmp3.
or for more money a rmraudio.com really nice preamp.
but i'm sure the vtb1 will keep you happy.
happy new year.

...

cant go wrong with 1 gig, windows XP alone (if thats what your using) uses alot of physical RAM to keep it running, 1 gig, will last for a very long time as a buffer for more apps, games, etc...

depends on the app and OS you are using.....

i have Windows98SE running N-Track and 380MB is more than enuff.....as a matter of fact it was enuff when i had 128MB.......

? for Gidge

Yo Gidge:

I have Windows 98SE and have been having a shutdown problem. The screen just freezes and I have to hold down the button to shut it off and then it tells me the next time it has to run scandisc because I didn't shut down properly. [I do not use the PC for recording.]

I can live with this but do you know of a check I can put in or remove that will let my PC shut down? I've already downloaded the fix which didn't FIX it!

Thanks

Scandisk

I know how to keep scandisc from coming up if you need to know that. :)

just don't shut down your computer........

Yo Josh: Thanks but I don't use the PC for recording.

Yo Spin:

Thanks much; I'll check out the sites.

Yo Spin:

The "Computer Guy...." site did the trick I think.

I stumbled through his abbreviated directions opening the registry and several other sub files and finely added a value of "1," as per the driections and my PC shut down and rebooted.

I'll try again and see if that fricking "Windows Is Shutting Down" really does.

Thanks a bunch. Another learning experience in 2004. And, I saved the site. I'm getting smarter.

Hey Spin:

Heh, heh, heh....

I got it "fixed." It works so good that now my PC will shut down and immediately start up again.

Ha! I can't believe it. But, I'm sure that in 2004 I will trash my HD on this PC and get a new CPU and a new edition of Windows.

It's kind of interesting to step through the registry and click open files and do "things." [I don't really know what the hell I'm doing but following the directions.]

But, I really appreciate the help and, what the hell, if I'm going to dump this system soon, I'll push all the checks and buttons and see if it blows UP.

Happy New Year Spin....

Cool, I'm glad that the links helped you.

I have another site that is wonderful.

I have to look around for the link.

P.S. Be VERY careful when you are changing values in regedit.
