Hi everyone,

I am using an RV6 condenser microphone which is brilliant, but I am having a slight problem. I am using an m-audio fast track usb interface to connect the microphone to the pc via a USB port. I want to record directly to my pc but the fan on the pc is REALLY loud, and it is also producing quite a high ringing sound which gets picked up by the microphone. The only way I can avoid this sound is by turning off my computer, but then I have nothing to record into because I want to record directly into fruity loops, which requires my pc to be on.. I really don't know how to keep my pc on but avoid picking up the fan noise. I have tried gates but the noise is so loud it still picks it up when I talk.

I did try using my laptop instead, but it doesn't want to work with the USB interface and it produces a loud buzz when recording, so I tried to avoid that idea.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan.

There are several ways out of this problem.

1. Do as the previous post suggested and dont record in the same room as the computer.

2. Quiten down your computer which is what I did. There are several things you can do.

A. Fit a quieter power supply. They have larger fans which dont rotate so quickly plus
better fan bearings. Hence less noise.

B. You can get quieter fans for the processor heatsink. These work on the same principle
as the quieter power supply. Larger fan rotating more slowly. If you want to take this
to the extreme there are even huge processor heatsinks available that dont need a
fan at all.

C. The case of your computer can be insulated with sound deadening material which is
specially made for the job.

I have done all 3 to my own computer and it has quietened it down considerably. I think if you want absolute silence then record in a different room from your computer. It depends
on just how silent you feel is necessary for you.
