Anyone have any experience adding a Wireless Router to an already existing wired network?

I'm having trouble getting the wireless router to chase the IP address of the wired network so that any computer accessing the wireless obtains the same server address as the rest of the wired computer do...the new router doesn't seem to let any wireless computers access the network drive that is connected on the older wired router.

Should I have purchased a Wireless Access Point instead of another Wireless Router?

more specifically...i can get the wireless computer to access the internet through the new wireless router-->old wired router
But I just can't get it to access a network drive that is on the wired network.

You are going to have a hard time making it work, if your wireless router is trying to issue IP addresses, and your regular router is too....

Fortunately, alot of times you can make a wireless router act like a wireless access point. What kind do you have? If it is a netgear I can show you how, if not you are going to have to research it.

it's a Linksys
just doing some research right now I've read about possibly disabling DHCP on the new wireless router so it doesn't try and assign an IP and just connecting the LAN of the older router to a LAN input of the wireless router via a crossover cable.....so it the new wireless router acts as only a hub/switch and WAP. I'm going to try that shortly.

Why are you taking the wireless route though? Anything particular? Are you going to be using both the computers for music?

it's for an office (not my computer)....we're trying to extend the wireless range. Right now there is a big brick wall blocking the current wireless router's ability.

yep, got it working the way I guessed it would....

plug a cable from the original network into a LAN port (not the Internet port) on the wireless router. Configure the router to disable DHCP and the router now acts as a switch both wirelessly and wired.
