I want to be able to do the following

- Record at least 2 tracks at a time using RNCs, etc. per channel (I dont want to send all tracks thru the same effect)
- Listen to previously laid down tracks thru headphones while recording a new track
- Mixing thru monitors (instead of headphone) & then recording mixdown

My questions:
Can this be done without a mixer? Even so - would it be recommended to go that route?

I figure I would need a preamp on each mic and an input for each on the soundcard. However, do most recording soundcards have connections for monitors (prolly a stupid question)?

Now - If a mixer (external from the computer) IS in the setup: I have a question about mixing.

How do you record a mixdown back onto the computer? In other words - if I record a bunch of tracks to the computer, I want to be able to listen to them thru monitors while I adjust levels, panning, EQ, etc. on the mixing board. Then I want the final mix to be sent (recorded back) to the computer with those settings. I would be using effects both internally (thru CoolEditPro) and externally for the final mix.

Currently I have a cheap Behringer mixer (which doesnt have inserts) and a Soundblaster PCI128 card (which 5 years ago was touted as an excellent economical recording soundcard on [I believe] this very site). I have been able to do everything I needed to do (with decent sound quality) but I realize that my soundcard might need an upgrade. I also am considering a new mixer [Soundcraft M8] to replace the Behringer.
