Howdy, right now I am running a P4 2.2 Ghz, 256 mb ram, 40 gb harddrive computer. I was looking at getting a 512 mb ram dropped in, and a 160 gb external harddrive. Right now, depending on what software I am using at that moment, I max out at about 16 tracks, all have eq, with one to two effects on each. Would I be able to handle anywhere from 16-20 tracks, with two effects on each, and eq on each with the new additions?

i know your looking for RULES. but its very difficult to forecast.
just too many variables. for one - how the programmers coded your software and the plug ins you use and their system resource efficiency.
i really wish i could give you rules but its difficult with so many different variables between different computer systems.
the normal minimum i recommend for a daw is 512 ram. and two fast hard drives. i prefer 8mb caches.
you didnt mention whether you have xp. also - i'm assuming you have dma enabled on your hard drive.

peace.
