I'm fairly new to computer recording and would like some info on how to setup my computer/mixer to achieve the following:
I'm using Cubase SX. All tracks are external (guitar, vocals, etc.) except the drum track which is created using the built-in VST instruments. I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum (I know, it's not the best) and a Behringer Eurorack MX1604A mixer. I want to be able to listen to the drum track while recording the guitar tracks. The mixer has PFL, Solo, pre/post selectable sends, etc. but I haven't yet figured out how to set it up without any feedback loop, and at a volume that allows me to hear it well over the guitar volume.

It's probably something simple - please don't assume I know anything (everything I've learned about the recording process thus far has been through trial and error, but this time I need some help).

Basically, which inputs/outputs and settings on the sound card and mixer should I use (there's about a hundred of them) to get the best results?

Yes - there are actually two different headphone outputs (one on the PCI card and one on the 5 1/4" bay) but that doesn't solve the feedback loop problem.

So why even go through the mixer?
Just listen through the headphone out on the soundcard.

Then there is a problem with latency - this sound card doesn't support direct monitoring. Also, the sound quality (as recorded) is much better through the mixer.

guitar (bass, mic, etc.) --> ToneWorks processor--> MX1604A mixer --> Line 2/ Mic 2 In (Audigy 2 Platinum)

what outputs are you using on the mixer?

also what outputs does the soundblaster have?

I've tried Main and Alt 3-4, but there are about 100 different button/knob selections that I may have in the wrong position (because I'm not that familiar with all of the mixer controls)

Soundblaster has 1/4" out, several 1/8" (on the PCI card), fiber, midi (mini-din), spdif,1394, etc. etc.

Latency?

Monitor through the headphone out.
It should have no latency - turn the channel up that your input is coming from up on the windows mixer and turn OFF monitoring in cubase.

try alternative - much better drivers www.kxproject.com

These drivers allow you to change the internal routing of the emu10k1 and directly connect an imput to the headphone out for monitoring.

Hope this helps
