Hello all,

New here & planning to upgrade my computer. I will be working with a stand-alone recorder (I think I'm getting an AW1600) & flying in the tracks to process with Audition, Ozone, Sound Forge, etc.
I am thinking about building (having it built, really) my next computer, and trying to decide what processor to use. Gonna be Intel, but my question is do I need to go with a Quad core, or will a Duo be fine? Does the audio processing benefit from the Quad? If anyone has a suggestion as to which MOBO would work well for this, I'm all ears.
DDR2 or 3 for RAM? Do you see a difference worth the money?
The other plan would be to buy a ready-built computer. Any opinions on brands? I can get a Dell with the latest i7 processor, pretty loaded, for $1500. Would need a soundcard, of course.
Thanks.:D

Depends on your software. Check with the developer. Also important note: All software with active development teams will eventually support multiple-cores.

For audio work, no.

Total waste of money.

I'd check out the E8400. Plenty processor for anything you'd want to throw at it.

You may want to look into 64 bit processing if you're going to keep this for awhile. That is the direction things are heading.
Not to devalue what NYMorningstar said, but the Core 2 Duo chips, and every other mainstream line of current chips all support 64 bit and have for years.
My wife just got a computer built with 8 gigs of RAM. Imagine that, 8 gb's. Check out the Core i7 plus X58 platform.

The only thing that has ever maxed out my 4 GB has been rendering ray-traced 3D scenes in Mental Ray with millions of polygons at HD resolutions...a task normally done on server farms (I had to do it for a project in class :(). Nevertheless, the day will inevitably come when 8 GB is required just to boot a computer. I will check out that i7 now, as I haven't really looked into it yet.
