computer based setup OR hard disk.

I decided i would have a computer based setup but i'm interested in having a hard disk recorder and outboard effects.
would there be any advantage of the having a computer based setup over a hard disk recorder,a mixer and outboard effects.
If i used a computer based setup i would be using outboard effects.
Right now i would buy a computer based setup but i want to find out as much as i can about different setups before buying .

I'm just not sure what is best now, anyone NOT have a computer based setup?
 
I used to use a Darwin hard disk recorder, then got an ADAT, then a got a PC. Really, a hard disk recorder is much like a PC in many ways. Although, it does not have the flexibility of adding plug ins and with some hard disks you can't "see" the wav. In my opinion, PC is the way to go due to flexibility. You can always use your outboard effects with the PC you know!I did like the aspect of the hard disk recorder, that it was much like any other recorder, ie. you arm the tracks and hit record. But... with a PC you have SO MANY options! Not to mention it is easier to upgrade and editing you songs is the most important advantage of the PC , in my opinion!
 
Will you could have a Alesis HD24 Hard Disk then run optical ADAT to your computer so you will be able to use the hard disk or use the HD24 as a A/D for computer recording.

i think i'll probably go computer based since i had and idea of a basic setup that i can add to.
using outboard effects and a mixing desk and/or control surface with a pc for mixing seems confusing, i cant figure it out much. :eek:
 
nah, it's not all that confusing if you spend a little time familiarizing yourself with each piece of gear. One thing that i would not suggest is gettin all of your geat at once. you will be overwealmed by all of the functions. Insted get a computer and good recording software. Learning that is important and makes life a lot easier. Then add your components such as monitors insted of speakers, a midi keyboard, your outboard gear, different pre amps, plug ins, more software etc....
One thing you will want to splurge a big on with your initial purchase is a decent soundcard that you won't outgrow too qickly, i would suggest something by echo or e-mu or m-audio.

I think the greatest advantage of computer music is the amount of control you have over editing and composition tools. You can use a program like BFD to add real sounding drums without having a drummer, or use a prgram like garritan strings to add orchestral instruments to your music. You can probably do this without a computer too but a comuter is so centrel and conveinant.
 
i'm gonna get the delta 1010 for my soundcard
i was going to buy all the pc components seperate and build it myself but i dont know much about actually building a pc and i dont want to buy a prebuilt daw because usaully it costs way more than doing it yourself.
 
i wouldn't say way more. I got my computer made custom in a local shop. I picked out the parts i wanted, i got them for a cheap as i could find them and the gusy put it together for me for an extra 50 bucks. money well spent for me as i would freak out putting tiny shit together like that. i also have a lfetime warrenty on labour, something i wouldn't get by building it myself.

I would definitely get a pc based setup over a hard disk recorder.

Apart from the greater flexibility/expandability of a pc, it would piss me off having to squnit at the stupid little lcd screen on the HD recorder to see what's going on.

If I had the cash, one of those Tascam FW1884 units looks pretty good. Mixer, preamps, A/D/A convertors, firewire outs, analog outs, midi, it's got the lot
