ok, here's my question. Say I had a Layla card with 8 ins and 8 outs. If I hooked a mixer up to that, channels 1-8 going to the inputs, and channels 9-16 going to the outputs. I would use Cool Edit Pro. now, say I recorded something into the first four channels, and I did everything else and I'm ready for mixdown. how would each track go into each channel so I could change the volumes of each track just with the mixer instead of Cool Edit Pro?

Ok, so you have 1 - 8 going to the inputs of the Layla for recording. When you play back, your sending the outputs of the layla into channels 9-16 of your mixer.

No problem. I'm not familiar with the Layla interface, but if you assign each of the outputs of the Layla correctly to the inputs of your mixer, it's just a matter of setting the gain/trim/fader settings on your mixer, and sending a stereo pair from your mixer, out to - 2 inputs of the Layla, or 2 inputs of a DAT, tape recorder etc...

Then you can adjust the volume's via the faders on your mixer. You may have answered your own question.
