I've been using the Waves Ren Compressor for the most part digging it, but I just got the CompressorX from Sonic Timeworks, and I really really like this compressor. It just seems cleaner and really adds some punch. It is also fully automatable in directX 8 with Sonar.
Just offering a recommendation. I'm a picky bastard, this is nice. Try the free demo, and try ReverbX, too. I like.

I really like the Waves plugins but I'll check those out.

I use the Rencomp also, but I cannot hear ANY difference between opto and electro, warm and smooth. What am I suppose to hear? Difference between compressors is also difficult: how can you tell the difference??

Compressor X is ok. Not as thick and gobby as RCL. Its clean and similar in sound to ultrafunk's compressor which is also an analog sounding yet clean comp. They both maintain transients while bringing up overall volume smoothly where waves RCL would pull the transients down and suck the life out a bit more.

Reverb X is beautiful. A nice complement to renverb which doesnt do bright verbs as well. I think it also has a better 3D image than renverb especially on shorter verbs. It keeps the reverb behind and further left and right of your source material as opposed to other verbs which are more centered and less defined. Thats part of why so many digital verbs sound grainy. The only flaw in reveb x is the lack of parameters which renverb has aplenty.

The difference between opto and electro has more to do with the behaviour of the compressor and not necessarily the sound. I can't really tell a diff between warm and smooth either, but I haven't really experimented to find the difference. I'm guessing the difference would be in how the compressor releases the signal.

I've uses the compX and it's pretty cool. I didn't even know there was a reverb x. I'll have to check it out. I love the sonic timeworks delay and phaser.

The dif bet opto and electro is that in opto mode the comp works faster release times when gain reduction is more than 3dB and slower release times when the gain reduction is less than 3dB. Electro reverses this and provides slower release times when the gain reduction is above 3dB and faster release times when its less than 3dB. Opto allows more transients to pass through by having the quick release on 3dB+ gain reduction...transients are typically more than 3dB. Electro will give a louder yet more squashed track.

*Warm*simply adds low harmonics and is very audible on any compression greater than 2:1. The greater the ratio and gain added, the more obvious the low harmonics become. In general sparse works better here as *warm*can easily muddy up a mix.

The Sonic Timeworks is way too obvious for my taste. I can't seem to find a setting that doesn't sound like it's over-compressing. To each his own, I guess.

I love Sonic Timeworks, though. Their EQ is amazing, and their Mastering Comp rocks.

i wouldn't say one is better then the other i'd say one is better for certain apps then the other.,..i'd choose the compressor X over the RCL for drums but for vocals i'd pick the RCL over the compressor X(but i'd REALLY use ren vox for vocals great plug-in waves has done it again)
