does anyone know of an article or web-site that i can go to that explains the uses and functions of a compressor for dummies??

It just so happens that at least a couple of guys around here learned to read AND write!

Shailat has some really good articles with audio examples in them of what he is talking about actually sounds like. In the compression article he wrote, there is a link to an article I wrote that explains all the controls of the compressor. Worth the read if you need to figure it all out.
