Compressors: Which is the best?

This keeps getting more and more entertaining. Anyone wondering where the 5-star rating came from . . . look no further.

Or, you could buy the Drawmer DL241 for about $700, and hear what the Composer Pro was _supposed_ to sound like- since it was basically a knockoff of the Drawmer design. I just sold my pair of Composer Pros, and replaced them with the Drawmers, in fact.

They do link for stereo, but then I have the RNC for that, and it's one *hell* of a fine, transparent 2-buss squeezer. My RNC sees a lot of use.

The Drawmers exhibit a vast improvement in noise floor over the Composers, and are very sweet indeed. The difference when using them in mono as a gate/compressor/limiter for bass or Stick is very much worthwhile: less noise, much less artifacting as the gate closes, what sounds like a much faster and much smoother limiter for overs (less crunch if I'm being inattentive about the levels). I'm glad I decided to make that change, and for me, it was worth every dime of the extra cash to make the change- I have one in my road rack for those one-time-only, no-retakes live recording dates...

Your mileage may vary, of course. Don't let me sway your opinion.

On the other hand, the Composers certainly do have a couple more knobs and at least twice as many LEDs on the front, and those wicked cool high-tech-looking brushed aluminum rack ears. And they are ungodly cheap. And that counts for a lot around these parts, seems like.

But I *like* my Drawmers. They are a better tool for my own projects, and I've had them both.

I'll call in tommorrow and find out what price I really have. I can't tell yo u anything until then. I assume you buy everything from merscenary, and I'll tell you, I can beat their prices.

Wow. I type too slowly, it seems. There were 10 posts between when I started that response, and when I finished...

Sure, ok give me your price on the Mackie hr824's and the 1604vlz pro. I just got those prices yesterday, so let's compare

What do you mean "my price" - I'm not an audio retailer!!?!?!

???

(and you won't find Mackie gear at Mercenary)

Hey, Rip Rowan's MY idol too, I mean wow, HIS bedroom studio is at least 4" longer than mine, what's NOT to idolize? However, my REAL room is about 24 feet longer, so NOW who da man???!?

no point
it doesnt really matter. i guess my question has been answered.

Hello Tyler! Back in late 2000, I touted the performance of Beh's
Composer Pro,MultiCom and AutoCom. Based on comparison with
the 1st comp I've ever own, The Alesis 3630 (which as every-1 knows, produces way too many unwanted sound residuals during
gating and comping) the Beh's provided decent sig processing.
However, Cuzzin' Brucie Blue Bear disagreed on my analysis and virtually sold me on the RNC! Smooth, transparent operation w/o
undue coloration on basic operation! Street priced @ $175, I was fortunate enuff to purchase 1 @ $155 at Sammy's 2 yrs ago!
The 3630 only useful purpose is controlling that d@mn inherent "hiss" produced by drum machines and creating wierd
bass efx! That's it! The Composer Pro serves adequately in limited
purposes such as simple, peak limiting, subpar gating and the basic
de-essing of spoken word and soft vocal passages.
RNC s/b your 1st comp which it provides most excellent processing! As far as the Drawmer is concerned,it's mostly unparralled and near-flawless construction & operation ,offers superb comping and gating that's d@mn near so clean that most thresh and ratio levels set properly for the material being processed sounds sooooo natural, one may forget that the Drawmer is in actual operation!
On the aforementioned comps, I simply based my opinion on actual use and the Drawmer, from listening to recorded material at a few NYC stoo-dee-s' and recordings used with such in the MP.3 forum here. If you don't have the opportunity to A/B/C them,
take a listen to many members here jammies, and inquire on what comps they used, on what and use your own ears to judge, rather than just throw out blind threads asking every-1 what's better than this 1! Your thread basically indicates that you
are not at all experienced with comps. Why!!?? You included the Alesis 3630 for comparison and that tells a lot! Mannn, I'm no expert either, but fortunately I read the many informative threads here w/o trying to come-off like I know everything!
Chill home-boy!!

Peace
Mr.Q

There's a lot of compressors I'd like to own someday - LA2A, 1176, Pendulum Audio, etc. But if I wasn't spending that kind of money, the RNC would definitely be at the top of my list.

By the way, if someone could please tell me who Rip Rowan is? I was a little late getting here and didn't have time to buy a scorecard for today's game. (you know... "Get ya scowahecahds heah! Cahn't tell the playahs without a...") (OK, so I hang around Fenway a lot....)

I dunno where that Tylerdude lives, but I'm in Holland, and getting an RNC here is nearly impossible, and getting it for under $300 IS impossible. I might go with either a Tube Composer Pro ($220) or a TC Triple C Mono ($180).
And if it's true that the Tube COmposer Pro is just a regular Composer with an added tube, I still can use it for peak limiting if the compression features suck.... right guys?

Tyler, I'm starting to believe that the Alsesis 3630 is right up your alley. You definately need the 3630.:D
