Compressor Settings on Final Live Mix

In your first post, you said the sanre was onlyclipping by 1-1.5 db over. Was it that much lower when you turned it down just enough for the snare to not clip any more?

If so, then we go full circle again and talk about "mastering". Turn the mix way down and put it through a limiter, set the peak at -.5, and you'll get the volume you want without clipping.

OK, limiter it shall be.

Ummm...

How does any digital file ever peak above 0dbfs? 0dbfs is all bits on, as loud as it gets. There's no possible way to encore and save a file louder than that. Are you gaining it up after transferring into the computer?

It may be possible to exceed 0dBFS in an audio file if the audio data is stored in floating point. In that case, at some point prior to DA conversion, the audio data would certainly need to be normalized/scaled so that the highest peaks fell at or under 0dBFS to avoid digital clipping.

Ashcat,

There is no gain applied. The file gets imported into my DAW as 2 tracks, L and R, that are individually visable on 1 track of the DAW. The fader is set at -2dB, and the master fader at -1dB.
