Compressor pedal for more extreme sounds?

I'm looking for a compressor pedal to use in conjuction with the long reverbs of my Digitech XP-400 reverberator, to get some crazy smooth String sounds...

Does anyone know of a decent compressor pedal that lets you really put a high ratio without too much attack? Is the BOSS CS-3 any good for that?

I'm looking for something fairly inexpensive (around $80).

George Dennis units are rather lovely. I saw the LIMITER/COMPRESSER go on ebay this week for about £40. Not sure if it's been discontinued as it's not on his website anymore. But if you see one get it... it's great!

Oh! One other trick if you want that string type wierd sound...


Break your leg! Or someone elses!! Either way, you want the surgical steel. It's got a great tone. Just rub it on the strings for the coolest sound... I promise that if you use it on any track you'll be wanting to use it on EVERY track! So much nicer than a standard synth pad.

I've been using the MXR M132 Super Comp and have been VERY happy with it. It has 3 controls...Sensitivity (compression ratio), Attack, and Output. The compression sounds very good, and has a wide sweep. The attack control really does make a big difference and allows for long sustain without extra attack noise. The output control allows you to increase or decrease the output volume to compensate for volume changes produced by the compression. Don't know how much they run locally, but Zzounds.com has it for about $70.

I use the CS-3 constantly in my rig. I love it & wouldn't ever trade it - however, i'm not so sure it'll do what you want it to do. My suggestion would be to buy one somewhere that allows for returns & try it out on your own setup to be absolutely sure it sounds like you want.

Yeah, I have a CS-3 and I use it every time I play guitar. I really love it. It's not exactly the best compressor out there, but for the price it does a good job. I think that anything much nicer gets into the $150+ price range, so the CS-3 is a great option in its price range.

Ok. I got the surgical steel from an old housemate recovering from a broken leg after snowboardind disaster. I've never been that sensitive!... Anyway, it's like a normal steel pole but much rougher. A little rougher than the metal poles used in scaffolding. But it makes a great resonant sound (much less airy than normal bowing.) Not sure where you can get it other than an accident. I'll leave it up to the more creative amoung you!

I second the MXR super comp. I bought mine for around $40 off ebay. I works really well. I also keep reading about people being happy with the CS-3's.

I've recently started playing with artificial harmonics more than I used to.

Since I use a clean tone mostly the harmonics sometimes get a bit lost. I was wondering if a compresser pedal might help with this?

It is the Aphex Punch Factory.

Price: a little bit more than the Boss CS 3 but not too bad [heh this all depends on your location]

The boss has more options soundwise, but qualitywise the Aphex is better

Take a walk in the posh part of town on a Fridaynight, when all the townies are out.

Make sure you get into one of their nice houses.

As you are doing this, make sure you make some cheerful noises which will wake up the police.

When the police comes around to collect you ask them to lock you up in one of their premium cells.

Take one of the iron bars from the cell that they lock you in, now this kind of steel is very resonant, and will do for the "surgical steel sound".

Not sure how you will use it on your recordings though as you will be behind bars for a while.

hey guys thanks a ton for the replies! Yeah i'm mainly looking for a pedal where tone quality isnt the biggest issue, mainly I want a compressor where I can crank the compression ratio to high heaven!
