Compressor in chain

Hey all,

Where are compressors typically located in the signal chain , esp for vox and guitar?

My inclination is to put it after the preamp and before the mixer. But what about before the pre or after the mixer?

It really depends on the situation and effect you are looking for but in general with mics they ALWAYS go after the preamp. On guitars you can use them either way.
