Compression
Celine Dion makes sure she gets no compression in her IEM's (read this a while ago).
Have you ever sung with compression in your monitors (IEM or speaker) and do you find it good or bad - for you. Do you always sing compressed or uncompressed? Of course soundman for a venue's house PA may decide for you....

If you compress vocals in monitors people tend to sing with more dynamics which undoes the compression and can promote voice damage. A simple XLR splitter lets you put the vocal mic into two channels allowing different processing for mains and monitors.

Interesting - I had some vocal strain today with compression on. I turned it off about half way through my practice but the throat was already a little tender. I like the even level and tone of the compressor but it did cut a bit off the edge.

Your gonna get almost certainly compressed by the sound man live but a display of microphone techniques could save him/her for reaching over to compress you more!
