What compression settings do I need to get a real pumping bass, without losing the dynamics?

A 4:1 ratio with fast attack and release is a good starting point.Set the threshold to compress only the peaks.

Grinder.

The ratio is cool.
But, where would one begin with the threshold settings, as a rule of thumb?

I usually set the threshold so the compressor starts working when the signal hits 0 or a little before.I use it just to take off occasional peaks, for a more driving bass line you might want to lower the threshold and raise the ratio. As I said before, these are just starting points. What works with one compressor might sound like shit on another.

Thanks Grinder.
That helps with one of the problems I had.
I fiddled and fiddled and finally got the track to sound right, but I don't know if I really did it correctly.
What I'll do is redo the track and give a comparitive listen.
I appreciate your help.

Badgas, You're welcome.

Resonator, Fast knee seems slightly better to me on my compressor.I would try both and see what you like better.
