compression, chorus and reverb....help!!

OK - I'm kinda retarded when it comes to these things. I use those three effects on my vocal tracking, and the compressor settings work great, but I'm not getting what I want out of the chorus and reverb.

For chorus I want to adjust the "depth" and "width" of the chorusing, but I have no idea what parameters to change to effect that.

For reverb, I want want to be able to adjust the timing of the "echos" in the reverb, but again... I have no idea what to tweek to adjust that specific detail of the reveb. Or should it even BE reverb... maybe delay??

Can anyone help me out here?? I know I am showing my ignarance, but I've spent much more time working on singing, playing, and writing than learing how to use my effects..... :p

a reverb wont give you an echo. just a decayng wash of your original signal. you need an echo unit. for around 400$ you can get a space echo. for 1k$ you can ge the fulltone echo. both of these are tape echos. that will give you all the repeat and washy tones you could want. you can get a line 6 modeling delay unit (dd2 or somthing i think), this will give you the famous line 6 attempts of recreating many famous delays in a bright green ugly box. alot of people say theyre great for the $. i think theyre a bit thin but not bad.
 
Tape delay? I haven't seen one of those in 20 years. For 200 or 300 you cna get a TC Electronics m-1 that has more reverb, delay, chorus, etc... than you could possibly need.

As far as adjusting the paramaters, you would need to tell us what adjustments you can make. Not every unit has the same set of controls.

Check some of the basic tutorials in the effects section. That should get you started.

Some things to think about:
1. Reverb and chorus should be used as "send" effects so that you control the amount of signal processed. You only want to use enough to add a little space and width, unless you are looking for some sort of special effect.

2. Use big space reverbs for ballads, and smaller space reverbs for pop/rock.

3. Adjusting the pre-delay will change the time before the first reflections of reverb come it. Setting it properly can clean up your sound immensely.

4. Adjusting the eq of the reverb (e.g. cutting the highs off the reverb tail) will often sound better.

5. Sometimes a short delay will work better than reverb for a particular song.
 
damn i dunno what studios youve been in lately and not seen a space echo hanging out. those things will never go away! why??!! because they kick ass! such an amazing washy echo. all the digital echos these days have settings thet TRY and emulate those things. get a space echo, stage echo, copycat, echoplex, fulltone echo if you want real, warm delays and will be happy you did. 20 years of no tape echos blows my mind.

I really thought they stopped making them 20 years ago. I remember desperately looking for one in 1988 and coming up with nothing, I thought they were all gone. I was trying to re-create my old guitar rig. The only ancient Roland delays I keep seeing are the SDE-2000 and 3000's. But I was looking for this long before e-bay

I'm not looking for "special effects" exactly....I'm looking to make the vocals sound large, but not overpowering, and still transparent. I want to keep the detail as if I'm right up in your face, but I also want to slightly accentuate the "acoustics" of the large warm "room" I'm in. That is all digital of course, 'cause I'm recording totally clean in an acoustically dead room. Does all that make sense??
