I do sound for a Pentecostal church and we just recently started broadcasting our worship services on a local tv station. after a couple airings, it is quite evident that we need to insert a compressor in before it hits the tape. For this sort of thing, how squashed should the signal be?? Suggestions for compressor settings to start with would be much appreciated.

Well......... why do U think U need a compressor in the first place???

but if U need to use one, set your ratio at about 2:1-4:1 and go no higher than 4:1.....

and your threshold would be fine at around zero............

generally broadcasts are REALLY compressed........ but if U do anything more than 4:1 at a zero threshold it is limiting, and thats completly overkill...... even 4:1 is a lot

The station I work at are is filled with morons who don't know audio, and won't listen to me when I say to turn compressors down..... the compress everything up in master control so heavy it begins to sound fuzzy and a little distorted, and they are using Aphex compressors(1k each), so that shows how much they are overkillin it

Don't overcompress =)
