Compress before or after?

onesidered

Hi. I have been working in DP4 for a few months. I like the software compressors/gates etc. My question is should I record my drums raw, then compress them? or record them with compression running as a preamp?

Thanx,

Yes, process afterward.

For instance if you compress the kick while recording - it will make the cymbals and snare louder on that track.

So, if you gate it, then compress it (both after you record it) then you can get the kick really tight and thick sounding.
