I'm putting off any major recording until I get into a quieter room (about 3 weeks) so I've been using any spare time for trying to achieve better overall sound. I remixed this one with 2 new guitar tracks and heavy attention to EQ. This was recorded with an SM57 and an SM58 (both Beta). I recorded the orchestra at the Portland Symphony Orchestra music hall after talking them into doing a session with me.

One of the previous statements is pure bullshit.

If a few of you could reach into your little black hearts and pull out some constructive critism (particularly in the EQ department), I would be much obliged.

Thanks a lot :D

Holy Download...

11MB...

Arrggghhh...

I'll be back. :D

wow. an epic... well worth the 10 min. download... I guess I shouldn't bitch too much... 6 months ago, it would have taken overnight to download! You achieved a lot of different textures. I really dug that guitar/synth mix sound. Very cool. I also liked the synth/string stabs with the china type and snare. Maybe bring up the synth/strings on those stabs for a more dramatic effect. Just a thought...

I hear a lot of different influences... Pink Floyd, Tool, Randy Rhodes, Queensryche... am I way off base here? Anywho, the song was very cool. I am now going to have to listen to all of your stuff. They all look like big downloads, so I'll see ya in about a week...

Man, I feel bad. You usually give me totally helpful advice, and I have none. I listened about 10 times, and I can't find anything "wrong" that falls outside the rhealm of personal taste. I tried.

Good Job,
Chris

Sounds great!
I like the production, and your voice and vocal style are cooool!:D
Can't give any expert eq tips, just seems like it needed a little more low end.IMHO

Really enjoyed it,thanks.

Pete

Excellent Recording!

This is such a great recording! I think any mix advice would be pure subjective...This is just such a tight recording! The vocals sit well in the mix on my end. There are a few times when they seem a little bit low, but that is not such a big deal overall.

Sounds excellent! :)

p.s. when I went to NWR it said this song is about 45 minutes long ... which, I must admit kind of scared me a bit (I thought you were going to play us an entire album...lol)

In case anyone sees this thread and is scared by the 45 min time, let me assure you the song is only about 7 minutes and it is well worth the listen! (just giving you a plug there)

:)

Wow! Holy Shit! Crap! Damn! :D:D:D
Too cool man...................I'm kinda at a loss for words.....it's so strong. I think that the mix is very good. Bass has good definition, the guitars sit well....the vocals have good presence and during the busy parts (very busy parts :D ) you still keep the instruments seperate.....pretty good mixing skills if you ask me. I agree with chris that any mixing comments would be just personal preferences.

Holy crap!

This rocks...hard.

I would offer only advice (if you call it that) on the vocal tracking. The choruses sound great and it gets a little stronger as it goes, But I'd like to hear the vox a little more "intimate" or close and a little thicker.
The drumming seems sparse to me in some parts, but seem's intentional. Some really coll sound fx in here.
Great job!

JAKE

shoot...the mixing comments wouldn't be personal preference....they'd just be wrong. This is tooo strong a tune, musically, arranging, production...recording.. man, SLuCy...you ought to be shot thinking there was someone here that could give you advice on this track. I even will take the goofy 'breath' intro and the silly guitar chord/note on the end......see!!! I listened to it all....many times. Just toooooooooooo good.

If I can just sound stupid, I might mention that your next gear acquistion might be one of those "KILLER" reverbs, ya know...like a high end Lexicon...something no one here basically can afford. Something to give you some more detailed space. Then the next [waste of money] gear purchase might be getting into high end A/D converters...clocks...and all that necessary stuff to make it really ....ahum...aah...arg.... xb aaa..a "pro". I'd like to hear this mastered. So...why don't you spring for a couple thou...and makes some posts....eh??;)

I'd sure be interested in what some "real pros" would think of this.

oh..the EQ...you asked about that. I have no problems with it. "Maybe"...and just maybe I might mind the lack of having it sound like 'you are there'....ya know...a room?...or sumpin.

well, this is hands down one of the most professional sounding mixes i've heard on this board.......now...why do you need a quieter room again? to completely embarass us all on your next production? good work man

done..

and done rediculously.. lets here the details...

share the wealth man! :D

oooh this IS encouraging. I was a little nervous to look at this this morning....

JR#97- Those influences you listed are probably pretty damn right on. I'm a fan of all those guys. As far as "synth stabs" are you referring two the first two notes of the riff? If so, that's part of the main guitar riff. The riff is 2 fast chords followed quickly by a serious of single notes. It kind of sounds synthy, but it was a guitar part that was written before I had a synth :D

Chris- thanks for taking the time to download man. Means a lot!

Muzeman- I haven't burned this mix onto cd yet, so I'll look into that low end in my truck (sounds kinda strange doesn't it). I was trying to be careful about the low so I appreciate that feedback. Glad you dug the tune. Thanks!

boydrj- 45 minutes??? WHOA- I don't anticipate any 45 minute recordings for at least a few months :; Thanks for hanging in there bro! 45 minutes...sheeez....

Lt. Bob- Can you fit any more cuss words in there? When I posted the first mix of this, those busy parts were pissing off everyone with a pair of ears. I had to pay very special attention to that this time around. It was a long process of separation and isolation, and to be honest, I'm still not 100%satisfied with that passage, but it will rest for now. Thanks Lt. Bob. Hey what's the deal with that hurricane? Gonna miss you I hope...

jake-owa- I agree about the chorus vocal man. Sometimes I like it, and sometimes I want to re-record it with a condenser mic. We'll see once I move. Thanks for the listen.

Mixmkr- You son of a bitch. I can blow my own fragile bank account without your help. DO NOT TEMPT ME FRODO! But ya, I am in need of a good verb. I have an old Alesis Midiverb 4 that I never use, but I don't know how to use it on a DAW for mixing, other than recording it live, which I refuse to do. Mixmkr- Thanks for taking the time man. I was hoping for your opinion!

Powderfinger- Dude I've got major commercial vehicles crashing through the sreet outside. It's so annoying when you try to record a subtle vocal on a condenser (no condensers on this particular track) and you get VROOOOMMMMM SQUEEEEEELLLLL HEEYYYY FUCK YOU ASSHOLE SQUEEELLLL VRRROOOOMMM!

SAM- Ya I finally got to do those git tracks. Glad you like. I'd say the only major change other than the mix, is I added 2 new guitar tracks with the amp cranked in a closet and a slightly off center sm57. My poor suffering neighbors...Screw 'em. We got shit to do....

Thanks fellas!

"Why are you shaking so?"

Because this song is a damn earthquake, that's why!
Man, it sounds fantastic. I wouldn't change a thing, but would definitely hit on that second-chair violinist, she's hot.

Very good. Inventive, lots of good ideas and cool sounds.

Great guitar playing. The damped sections are maybe a wee touch boomy? (The guitar over on the right during the first couple of verses)

Good drum sounds.

Excellent vocal performance. I found the tone a little harsh on the raspy bits. I liked the *sound* of the raspy bits, but I thought a gentle EQ cut around 1-2k might take the piercing edge off the vocal during these sections? (e.g. around 2:55)

Anyway, I'd take all that with a large pinch of salt if I were you. I know very little. :)

Nice one. And scary too. :)

"I'll look into that low end in my truck (sounds kinda strange doesn't it). "

Dosn't sound strange to me,I usually look for the low end in my van!:D
Really, most of the decisions I make on a mix,I make driving and listening.
The distraction is just right to hear it clearly.

This is exactly what the band I was in a few years back wanted to sound like--and couldn't. Genesis, King Crimson, Rush, and of course something very different. I'm loving this. It wreaks of attention to detail. The song is great and I keeping waiting for the next song to start as if I'm playin a cd. There's way too much going on in this song to comment completely. But, awesome indeed. I can't wait to hear more.

Damn the talent on this board.

Jon

ps- You might find a used PCM 80 for cheap somewhere.
