I've only played the rack thing. Who's compared it to the floor pedal?

There's a POD that is unmounted, and the rack unit...either one is fairly the same, but the rack one has Digital outs and XLR, as I recall. I think it's more comparable to Pod 2.0, though...
All the floor controller does is plug in via ethernet port and control everything in the POD or POD pro...it's not a standalone unit.

I have a POD por and a floorboard but I don't get what your asking. The floorboard simply trigger's the POD pro via the MIDI connection, It just makes the POD a lot easier to function (ie when your playing and using both hands like you do playing guitar).

I mean Rack unit vs Bean shaped original style. I know they have different internals (16 vs 24 bit) but can you pick a winner in a double blind test?

I have been killing myself for 4 years trying to learn how to play guitar, and now that I'm finally able to make something that sounds a bit like music, I read that guitarists use BOTH HANDS !!!!

No you probably would be stumped in the double blind test. The pod pro though has an efx loop, better converters as well as different routing options for reamplification purposes. As well it conveniently fits on a rack..oh and it has spdif outs wich means seamless integratiuon with your digital daw.
I have the pod its cool, but it has to be kept in its place. Also, the behringer v-amp and yamaha dg are interesting. Personally I snatched a mesa boogie studio pre off ebay recently, only $200. It should arrive shortly, and Im eagerly awaiting the opportunity to compare and mix/match with my pod. Also, even cheaper on ebay would be the peavey rockmaster pre amp. Id suggest both items deserve a look up at harmony central as the pod gets much of the way there, but it sure aint ALL the way. I mean, if I match the right pod tone with the right guitar, nurse it through a pre amp then eq it its cool, but I still crave more, so Im going to try the mesa studio and see what happens. Just thought I'd share this as both the rockmaster and studio are affordable.

The fundamentals of the sound are the same. There are those that say they can hear a difference but I personally don't think so; if at all marginal. The only weakness on the pro is that it kind of stutters a little more than the 'kidney'.
I love the POD pro for the ease of playing live; you lose the kideny shaped POD if your not careful and you also don't have to carry around 20 tube amps and place them on stage; you just have a POD pro + pedals/guitars.

I see you're getting the Mega Boogie Studio Pre. Is that the two channel with 5-band EQ? I had that one and considered it a very good amp. I ran it through a Bassman which added a nice final color to it. The clean channel gain cascades into the crunch channel. You'll need a decent speaker simulator. Try latest H&K Redbox.
I don't know if I really want the Pod right now. The next wave of cool stuff is around the corner and with the 32 bit stuff I think direct tone will just about be there. But thanks for the low down on the machines.

Boogie Studio, Rockmaster, and POD
WOW! I didn't know they were available so cheap. It's an excellent preamp, but comparing it to the POD will be like apples and oranges. I.e., they are different from each other, but not necessarily better or worse.
The Studio will give you a couple of EXCELLENT tones. This is subjective because if the tones are not what you are looking for, you may not like them. Yet they are still excellent for their purposes. Also, you will need a decent tube power amp to truly tap the potential of the Studio. Additionally, I prefer how the Studio "reacts" to my playing. In particular, you can truly affect the tonality and character by adjusting your playing style.
The POD is almost a completely different beast because it is a modeler. It allows you to model a plethora of amps without loud power amps and speakers. I personally don't think the POD reacts to playing style as well as the Studio. However, the Studio cannot create as many different amp styles as the POD.
The Rockmaster is also an excellent preamp. I sold one when I acqured a Boogie Quad. The Rockmaster is almost more limited than the Studio. In particular, the Rockmaster gives an excellent heavy metal tone, but IMHO, not much else. If you want a good ballsy tone, do check out the Rockmaster.

I think I'll pare the studio down with the mesa 20/20. I want to get some really nice tone. However Im still experimenting. I'm also intrigued by pre's with midi capability, an affordable one being rocktrons piranha. But If thats a step down I may just look for a quad to have the 4 channels, or else shoot, even a tri axis if I can afford it(wich I cant). The egnater ie 4 looks quite hot..mesa formula?....rocktron pirahna?...anyone used any of these????

The quad has excellent tone. It is effectively a Mark II pre combined with a Mark III pre. Ooooh. The clean tones are shimmering. The dirt is also excellent. However, you won't be able to get a Mark IV or Rectified tone out of it.
Me too. Or I at least value paying off my credit cards more than getting a TriAxis (right now...).
I dinked around with the Formula. If it's like most Boogies, it takes some tweaking to tap it's potential. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time or the manual to make it sound good to my tastes.
