Who says the Sebatron is mid-grade? Dan richards (DOT) doesn't think so. Dan Kennedy (Great River) doesn't think so. Dan described the Sebs as "wonderful" on one forum.

Yeah, you're probably right. I would be interested to hear any reports on direct comparisons between or among the Sebatron, Pendulum Audio and DW Fearn. I've compared the latter two (chose the Pendulum for my uses), but haven't used the Sebatron.

Of course, there's high-end and then there's an even higher end: Pendulum, DW Fearn, etc. From what I've read, these guys (and a few others) are in a class all by themselves. But I also believe that most of the value is in the lower (priced), less established high-end, like Sebatron and Speck.

I gotta go with the Seb also.A perfect compliment to your Toft. And yes there are 'better' pres in the extreme high-end of audiofile heaven, just not in that price range. The Seb is so versatile you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

I don't wanna hijack the thread but I got a quick question to ask since there's no manual that came with my ATC-2.

Is it bad if the meter goes above 0db when you record guitar? Or maybe that's how one produces distortion with the preamp??

When my meter stays at around 0db the sound of the guitar is always clean. If I want a nice distortion sound, I need to crank the gain so that the meter goes well above 0db??

I don't wanna destroy my atc-2 so I'm asking before trying.

If it sounds good, it's perfectly fine! As a rule of thumb I would keep it below 0 but don't worry about it if it sounds fine.

Terry, for two channels around $1K the Sebatron vmp-2000e tube pre is an excellent unit. Colored, warm and softer – and a good complement to the cleaner ATC-2's sound. Or if you're looking for a single channel in the $1K range, the Great River ME-1NV would be a solid choice – especially if you want a vintage blues / rock sound. Very versatile pre.

I reviewed the ME-1NV http://www.studioreviews.com/me-1nv.htm

I was just playing my electric guitar through the sebatron and it really sounded amazing! The eq switches are nice, you can get some nice different sounds out of it. Very smooth.

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. I'm going to continue researching and saving pennies. Sebatron, Great River, Pendulum, Fearn, etc all look great. I'll have to find a few places that carry the good stuff, then see if they'll allow me to pack in a guitar and mic and go it for a few hours.
It's all fun!
