Comp CD Pre-Order ...

Ok you crazy Australians, here's the scoop.

Shipping UPS, even if I used my company discount, would be like $40 for their cheapest overseas services.

Shipping USPS, however, is right around $23.

Those rates are based on a 2 lb package.

How do you guys want to do it?

Is it gonna be cheaper to get it sent through Sydney or Melbourne (being substanitially closer to the US), and then using AusPost to pass it on to you in Perth? Or won't it make much difference (probably not a lot of difference, but at some point a package is going to have to cross the Nullabor.

Don't know how to go about this one...

Oh yeah - Slack - how much is two pounds in kilos? Is it 2.2 pounds to the kilo? Are two CD's really gonna weigh close to a kilo?

Something's pretty screwed up with that price Slack - my guess is that to send a similar thing to the US from Australia would cost no more than about US$5

Gaffa: 2.20462262 pounds per kilogram.
I just weighed up a variety of CDs with insert and jewel case on my balance and none of them were over a quarter pound.
(113.39809 grams)
So four CDs per pound roughly.
Sounds like a ghetto drug deal for an elbow.
Explanation: Using 4 CDs as a weight equivalent when purchasing a pound of drugs.

And Slack: After some DEEP thought I came to the conclusion that you had a point about the money orders. After reading some of that shit in a thread about credit cards, it's obvious that not all of us can be expected to understand how to write a check that won't bounce. And I'm not talking about people that try to stiff somebody- just those that can't understand how the system works.
And surely nobody deserves to get stuck with a bounce charge after volunteering to move this project along like you, Ed and Emeric.
Money order it is.
 
The reason it's $23, gaffa and coop, is that I priced 2 lbs. The reason I priced such a high weight is that you guys were talking about having them all shipped to one of you...which would be something like 4-8 CD's (2-4 sets) depending on how many of you there are...I know omnipotent is out there somewhere though he hasn't popped up in this thread yet.

Anyway, I got these rates straight out of the book this morning. There is actually a cheaper USPS route that can take up to 2-3 weeks and is not guaranteed...but I think you only save a few bucks.

I'll post rate tables tomorrow if I remember.

And no, it doesn't matter where in australia we send if we go USPS...if we go UPS then it only matters whether we go east or west...and I heard from one of the guys in the shipping dept that FedEx gets into australia easier than UPS, so I'll check their rates too.

Doc, I'm glad you see my point about the money orders. It doesn't really have anything to do with trust...it has more to do with avoiding mistakes :)

I would like one but I have another question... shipping to the UK? and of course there's the small matter of an international money order but I can find out about that part.

Count me in. Is sending cash a problem? Seems that it would be easier for you that way, but if you prefer a money order, then that works for me.
