I downloaded a backing track and played guitar over the top. Here's my version of Pink Floyds "comfortably numb".

Comments?

Not bad -- a little sloppy... ya gotta watch the timing and some of those bum notes......

The recording certainly won't win any awards, though.......!

cool :) I like the tones on the 1st and 2nd octaves on the E and A strings, phat...

Not bad apart from the obvious bits. You should bring the backing track up a good bit. And maybe try and get more sustain on your guitar. Add some nice reverb to the guitar also.
Good attempt and some nice licks in there.

YIKES!

Waaaayyyyyy too over-the-top...... Satriani-style riff'ing over Floyd doesn't cut it at all, IMO........

To me - it's not about the number of notes you play per second, it's about injecting emotion into each note you play!

There's no point in doing it the same way as Dave Gilmour as that would simply be 'another cover'.

Sorry you don't like it, but then again...I do and that's all that counts!

Absolutely...

There's a significant difference between the first and second MP3s... better.

The distorting guitar (lower registers) is gone in the second clip...

Is the backing track the same?

I call it like I hear it............... anyone looking for a pat you on the back and being told how wonderful it sounds (regardless of how bad it actually is) should ask their momma........

I stand by my comments........

Oh, OK BlueBear, I see this forum has one of these types too...A condescending tosser who thinks he is right on everything. I'm not looking for a pat on the back, just looking for genuine feedback. Every forum has it's "tosser", and in this forum it appears to be you!

You got "genuine feedback" from me (you neither have to like it, nor accept it - do what you like with it!)...

But my comments to Sonixx weren't directed at you -- Sonixx likes to shoot his mouth off periodically.......

Yea, but this sarcastic comment was...

What was sarcastic??? It was my opinion...... the recording isn't great, and I said so......... period.

Fuck.... get off it!

Hey,

All the "pissing" made me decide to listen. Here's my two cents. Albiet totally uneducated two cents.

The first one is MUCH MUCH better stylistically(sp?), however, the recording is crap (sorry). There is a significant amount of distortion and clipping, especially in the left channel.

The second one sounds a lot better recording wise, but I gotta agree with Bear, it just don't fit to me. But hey, to each his own. That's the great thing about music.

Whoops!!! Gotta chime in here....

First.... Blue Bear is right on when he says you won't win any awards here for mixing. Sh*t, it's the "Karaoke" of production... "Paint by numbers".... It's a "PRERECORDED BACKING TRACK" !!!!!

Adding to that.... THE GUITAR IS TOO LOUD IN THE MIX!!!! WAY!!!! (Yes I know I'm screaming....)

Okay.... now that the "production" is out of the way..... ;) ;) ;)

You have "some" chops, but, come on.... did you have too much coffee this afternoon???
I mean... I'm a Paul Gilbert, Malmsteen, Vai, etc fan.... but you lack taste and something called "phrasing" in your playing....

You asked for a critique, and when Blue Bear called you on it, and gave a fair and objective (and frankly, experienced) take on it, you wigged....

Well, as a major proponent of 80's shred metal technique.... I give you a C... if you're over 40, and have been at this since 1987 or before, the grade drops to a C- :D :D

It's not personal, I just think you need to learn "when" to shred, and when to build an emotional peak....

And another thing... I've never met Blue Bear, but his freakin' credentials and contributions to this board are enough that I would respect his opinion. He's certainly earned the right to have one....
