That kurten guy was pretty awesome. I can see why you'd honor him.

Great recording. Lots of little details, love the synths! Totally sounds like Peter Murphy singing for Sisters of Mercy.
Really dense mix in places, specially where the guitars come in. Really great ear candy from 3.00 - 3.15!
...do you think it should be thinned? What would you do to thin it?
Oh mang I dunno. I'm with recording like you claim to be with guitars... I only noticed cuz I heard some pumping around 2.30-2.40 but I'm pretty sure it was Windows Media Player choking a little, cuz it went away when I dropped the gain on the player. I got all excited and listened to that section 15 times hoping I had something useful for you, but no dice.![]()
Yep the vocals have Sisters of Mercy all over them.
This is really well put together Keith. Sounds really good.
Did you fiddle with the kick at all? I've listened a few times over the last few days (never had a chance to comment - sorry!) and I thought the kick was oddly much busier in the beginning. This sounds tighter and better (unless you made no changes in which case I'm full of shit).
The distorted guitars sound somehow smaller than I suspect you want them too. Too much gritty gain perhaps? Not bad or anything, just not as powerful as I'd think you'd want.
The vocals were really well done as is the bass and all the other instrumentation. The vocals have the perfect lilt to them for this I think.
I am so biased against this era of music that it's difficult for me to be objective, but I did enjoy the track, even upon repeated listenings. Well done.
Im not going to be happy with substandard stuff after doing this for so long now...
I definitely wouldn't go so far as to say "substandard" as I'm not even 100% what that part calls for nor do I have a great frame of reference for your desired sound here.
You did those with amp sims? That's cool, but if you have a real amp and some pedals, mic 'er up and see what you get!
Yep the vocals have Sisters of Mercy all over them. They sound great. The guitars are a bit fizzy. I find what sounds great in the room doesn't necessarily translate well in the mix. Backing off the gain can help. I like that guitar that comes in near the end. It's a cool track and a worthy collab
I think you can get what you want with sims. By all means try your amps, but it's not like you're needing a classic holy-grail pure guitar tone. You're looking for an aggressive raunchy kind of sound. I think you just used the wrong guitar and maybe need to tweak a few settings in your sim program. Maybe use less guitar tracks. Not a big deal.
Yeah but i have a yearning to learn how to mic amps properly...and get away from just tweaking a preset. I think sims are absolutely fine if you know what youre doing with an amp, but im just shooting in the dark, i havent a clue...
The good thing is this dan all be revisited and im not trying to make a rock album, when the parts are relatively small its easy to go back...good fun though, feels new![]()
Strawberry blonde!!Yeah miking an amp can be a challenge and rewarding. Don't overthink it though. The same basic rules apply whether you're recording a big stadium rig or a small bedroom amp. Mic near the center of the speaker = bright. Mic near the edge = dark. Don't let the room influence your amp settings. Get your ginger head down near the speaker and see if you like what's coming out. When you do, mic it.![]()
Sounds like Bowie vocally, which is a good thing for me. Nice tone too. I glanced through the comments and I have no problems with the guitars, they have a tone all their own. I think they could be different but not necessarily better if that makes sense. Maybe a little louder. Anyway the synth work is as always fabulous. I thought the mix leaned to the right -otherwise I better go get my ears cleaned. lol.... Great job guys!
