Hey guys, thanks for re-visiting this long-lost tune, . We should play it live some time.

Jamfest 7 comes into mind. :) Didn't I read somewhere that you hope to attend this year?

gummblefish – I think so too. Hmmmm… I’ve got an idea….

I’m in. I’m going to be in London in June and may make it over to Ireland. Perhaps we should track something together.

There are so many possibilities for an extended version and added parts, I’m going to post the individual tracks if anyone would like to do a mix. Probably Tuesday. Anyone interested in mixing it?

Tim,

Hooking up with gummble sounds like a great plan and great fun! :) An extended version of this tune would be cool. You do a great job of mixing! You're elected to continue the task IMO! ;)

Sweet.

That is so cool.

Nice colab guys.

Everything is in place, good even mix.

The avangarde mix kicked as on acid :D

Kudos

Is that with or without maple Syrup, blueberries, or strawberries? :p ;)
Sugar-Free 'Maple' syrup.
(Yeah, I know... better than none.)

chrisharris – There is a little autotune on it but pretty subtle. It probably doesn’t need it now, given how the arrangement worked out with very little overlap of the vocal and lead gtr, and I may yet go back to the original for the final version.

I don't think you should be apologetic for that, and I don't think you need to change it either. People get all hung up on the "correction" part of the equation and totally dismiss the OTHER benefits...like a really smooth vocal effect. It sounds fantastic, and I'd hate to hear you change it. WE NEED NOT MAKE EXCUSES FOR OUR ART. :D

OK. I'm listening to the other versions I didn't hear earlier.

Avant-garde version: I loved it. It does have one major problem, however. It was much too short!!!!!!!

Anfontan version: Way cool; dobro sounds so nice. Same problem though: too short!!!!!!

Great fun. Thanks for sharing this.

Tim can I ask you what mic placement you used on the lead acoustic guitar in the first one? (This was recorded with the MSH mics right?). I like how you picked up a good balanced sound with some of the string/fret noise too.

The rhythm guitar sounds good too. They blend well and I'm guessing that was done with mic placement rather than EQ?

Tim can make magic with a 57.... :D :D :D :D

That would be cool Tim if we could meet up when you are over in the UK. Im heading over to England tomorrow to do a small tour so i will be "going dark" so to speak for the next two weeks, so i shall be in touch when i get back. When are you heading over to London? It may be just as easy for me (and you) to meet you there, im over in England quite a bit.
I really do think we should all do a BBS album together, maybe form some kind of internet Super Group...Take over the world.

60’s –
[Jamfest 7 comes into mind. … attend this year?]
Planning on it. :)

danny.guitar –
[…mic placement…]
just under a foot away from the neck/body joint of a small bodied lightly strung gtr. The difference between the parts was mostly a matter of a different way of using the flatpick in each part. The ac gtr solo choruses and the rhythm gtr were done using an MSH4/Great River combination. The fill licks were done with a KEL HM1 into a Tascam US122.

[…guitar lessons?]
haha – what a coincidence. Check my site in a few weeks… there’ll be some improvisation exercises using scales/arpeggios, with diagrams, notation and sound clips.

Nakatira – many thanks.

lbanks –
[…pancakes…]
I can appreciate that.

chrisharris –
[I don't think you should be apologetic for that…]
Didn’t mean to convey that... was just surprised that anyone noticed the autotune as there’s very little difference between the orig file and the processed one. I agree though, that mix decisions should be made based on artistic expression above other reasons. :)

Incanus – Thanks for listening. I agree that the two shorter versions are too short. A solution is on the way, heh. :D

gummblefish – We should have our travel plans more firm in a couple weeks, and I’ll PM you. It’d be great to play some music live, maybe do some recording.

ido1957 - thank you.

EDIT: I had put up a new mix link with some minor changes but after listening to it on a couple different systems decided it's not as good, so I just took it down. Ah well. There were some balance issues I'd like to fix but tricky to do without mush-izing the mix, heh. So I'll keep tweaking.

A while ago we did a blues collab called "Need Bass and Drums for a Short Acoustic Blues". Here's the result. Help me fine tune the mix.

Up All Night Blues

gummblefish - vocal (wrote the lyrics also)
me - rhythm and lead gtr
lbanks - bass
MadAudio - drums

I only had time to listen to the first offering (but look forward to hearing the other 2 maybe tomorrow).

Mix is top notch. Playing is dead on (maybe a few 'grooveless' moments where the bass falls out of the pocket near the beginning, no big whoopsies though). Like the acoustic sound and acoustic lead sound. That's tough to do with mics and have it sound that clean.

I'm not a fan of the vocal style but it works. He's somewhere between twangy and smooth, and I prefer one or the other.

I kinda hold recordings like this up as what I aspire to do. I'm getting close but I don't think I'll ever reach nirvana without the more expensive gear (all of my recording related equipment totals less than $1,500 and that includes the 2 guitars lol).

Thanks for the listen Pinky. Appreciate the comments.

I think you can make good recordings with low cost gear. This certainly isn't nirvana, but the only thing I used on it that was high-end was the GR pre, and the MSH4 that went through it sounded pretty much the same through a Mackie pre, believe it or not. I'll admit though that the bass and drumset used were probably pretty high end and that makes for a large percentage of the overall sound. But I just used a $300 Takamine gtr.

Wow this is awesome. Gummble, I expected quite the Nordy accent!

Thanks TelePaul.

OK, for those interested I'm creating a mix-it-yourself thread with the raw track files. It'd be great to see how others would structure the arrangement and handle the mix details in this since my own mixing experience is more limited to solo and duo gtr (if you can call that mixing :D ).

And then it turned into a jam with Anfontan sitting in on elec gtr and dobro - same rhythm section as above - and then with Dogman and me going avant garde with it.

Anfontan sitting in

Dogman and Lawler Cutting Edge Avant Garde

Really great performances from all. Thanks guys.

Suhweet!!!!! love the organic feel of the rhythm guitar closeness, especially... Excellent collab, gentlemen!!
