______
A while ago we did a blues collab called "Need Bass and Drums for a Short Acoustic Blues". Here's the result. Help me fine tune the mix.

Up All Night Blues

gummblefish - vocal (wrote the lyrics also)
me - rhythm and lead gtr
lbanks - bass
MadAudio - drums

And then it turned into a jam with Anfontan sitting in on elec gtr and dobro - same rhythm section as above - and then with Dogman and me going avant garde with it.

Anfontan sitting in

Dogman and Lawler Cutting Edge Avant Garde

Really great performances from all. Thanks guys.

Tim, cool stuff man. No real mix suggestions....it sounds pretty good, and raw. I can imagine seeing this in a club. I like that sound....the rawness. Personally, I wouldn't touch anything, unless you really want to try and polish it up.

Great stuff guys. Loved all three. Like Dogman says, it would go down good at a club.

Damn those blues licks are sweet Tim.....
Sweet vocals and tasty bass and drums...

The mix sounds REALLY good. What the heck are you compressing with? It sounds great!

Anfontan - Equally sweet licks on the electric and some seldom heard dobro (nice)....

Dogman - your hot licks resemble my EC Strat with the tone boost. That creamy sound...extra cool....

These collabs are great guys!

:) :D :) :D

Nice job, folks.

MadAudio is a fine drummer.

I like the avant garde version best. :D

I've only had time to hear the original version so far. Nice shuffle feel. Mr. Gummblefish has absolutely got the right sounding voice for this. It sounds like it's supposed to. And TL's got the blues in his soul!!!

Sounds very good. The guits (both) sound very full and I was wondering if they could use just a tiny bit of low-end roll-off to keep them just a little more distinct, but I'm not really sure. . . I can hear everything. That's about it from my ears. I'll try to listen to the others if I can. . .

Good job, all.

this was a lot of fun, thanks for posting tim!

mix thoughts:
guitars sound great. all of em. not sure that the tone of the distorted one in the avantgarde version fits the sonic vibe (at least not what i think of in acoustic blues), but the playing is quite nice--be nice to hear that in something like a slightly overdriven strat. :D

acoustic guitars sound really nice. on the "original" version i'd pan the left guitar a little harder left and since it's the "lead" maybe mult it and pan that towards the middle or bring a delay channel up and have that in the middle (or even right). i definitely understand wanting to have the lead in the middle--they just feel a little lopsided to me as they are.

bass and kick seem to get lost at places. overall, i'd say they both need to come up in level. then again, i tend to look at bass and drums as the foundation of all music (even acoustic) and i probably tend to mix a little "aggressive" with respect to bass and kick. the lows of the bass come through pretty well--but i'd definitely bring out (boost) some of the mids in both.

LOVE the snare sound. madaudio, what kind of snare is that and how'd you mic it? that's the sound i've been looking for!

overall, i think all three are mixes that definitely lends itself to showcasing the guitars. i'd bring up the low end for a little more grind and thump.

cheers,
wade

Dogman, cmhansen, ido1957, Supercreep, Greg L, Incanus, mrface2112, TravisinFlorida, chrisharris and Gorty – Hey guys, thanks for your comments. :)

Dogman –
[Personally, I wouldn't touch anything, unless you really want to try and polish it up]
Listening to it fresh I’m wanting to lower the rhythm gtr a bit, change the bass sound a bit for more definition.

ido1957 –
[What... are you compressing with?]
only compression used is on the drumset submix and vocal - a couple dB reduction on peaks using Blockfish in opto mode.

Supercreep –
[MadAudio is a fine drummer.]
Agreed!

Incanus –
[Mr. Gummblefish has absolutely got the right sounding voice for this. ]
Agreed!
[guits… could use just a tiny bit of low-end roll-off]The rhythm gtr has a lot of low end. I think it’s too high in the mix and am going to lower it a bit for general balance, maybe roll off also. Thanks.

mrface2112 – Thanks for your panning suggestions. I’ll see how they sound. Agree that the bass gtr needs something. I think, given the overall mix, the bass is too hot in the low-lows and lacking in 4 kHz so I’m going to tweak it. Perhaps the kick will be more audible after. Thanks for such detailed listening.

chrisharris –
[...vocal processing...]
There is a little autotune on it but pretty subtle. It probably doesn’t need it now, given how the arrangement worked out with very little overlap of the vocal and lead gtr, and I may yet go back to the original for the final version.

Tim,

Just for kicks, I grabbed the original file and I added a bit of harmonica and piano for my own entertainment.

Up All Night is a great tune!

It was cool listening to gummblefish sing!

Lbanks rocked on bass!

MadAudio is my favorite drummer, and he's a cool guy!

And it goes goes without saying that your guitar playing is nothing less than extraordinary.

I hope I didn't intrude on a collaboration in progress.

Up All Night

That's a really nice song.

:).

The drums, the bass, the guitars and the vox all sound just the way they should in a tune like this.

The behind the time runs on the guitar are done just perfectly. I couldn't never do that. :)

Great job doodz!

Thanks for the listen and the comments-it was a fun colab and the vocal version is outstanding. I think I remember Mr Gumblefish said he ad-libbed most of his lyrics off the top of his head-amazing Mr G!

Thats excellent Tim, Its been so long since i heard this i kind of forgot about it. The guitar playing, Drums and Bass are brilliant. I also really like Anfontans version and 60's Harp version. Maybe we could cut them all together and possibly extend the song. Really fun project. I was thinking that we should all do more...Perhaps an album?

60’s guy, bigbubba, lbanks, Anfontan, gummblefish – Hey guys, thanks for re-visiting this long-lost tune, . We should play it live some time.

60s – I like the harp! The verb on the vocal sound cool also.

bigbubba –
[…behind the time runs on the guitar…]
I like that lazy feel… glad you did too.

lbanks – man, that bass sound has mucho low-low strength. I was playing the mix for my wife, saying maybe I should change the bass EQ just a bit so it doesn’t have so much low end, and after 3 listens she told me she liked the room pulsing to the beat and not to mess with it. Pancakes... I don’t know what the pancakes thing means.

Anfontan -
[I remember Mr Gumblefish said he ad-libbed most of his lyrics]
Pretty cool, that. Nice playing Anfontan. :)

I think so too. Hmmmm… I’ve got an idea….

[we should all do more...Perhaps an album?]
I’m in. I’m going to be in London in June and may make it over to Ireland. Perhaps we should track something together.

There are so many possibilities for an extended version and added parts, I’m going to post the individual tracks if anyone would like to do a mix. Probably Tuesday. Anyone interested in mixing it?
