ColdHeat soldering iron

Anyone heard of this or tried it?? http://www.coldheattools.com It's a soldering iron that only heats when it's active and cools down immediately when done. And it's cordless. It comes with free wire strippers too that do the stripping for you. And all for $20. Sounds really useful...comments? :cool:
 
Looks like something cool to keep in the studio or kit box for gigs to quick repair cables. I have one I got at Radio Shaft that runs on ciggie lighter gas.
 
The thing is, to make a really good solder joint, you need to heat the metal surface the wire is attaching to, not just the solder itself.
From what I've seen of these, they just melt the solder.

I probably wouldn't use one.
 
hmmmm...good point Michael. But the video is cool!!!! lol Although, wouldn't tinning of the wire first help accomplish this?
 
I think it actually works. The limitations are laid out in the FAQs, and they are pretty severe.
1. The tip gets hotter the longer it stays in contact with the joint, rapidly rising to 1,000F and higher, making it unsuitable for anything much bigger than a guitar cable. I'd hesitate to use it on a speaker cable, for instance.

2. The current used to generate the heat goes through the tip, making it unusable for electronics work, as the current would fry any IC in the cicuit, and things like transistors are really sensitive to excess heat.

Yeah, I agree with MJ. Get something else. I musta been tired last night. If you want something portable and cheap, I still recommend the gas-powered model from RS.
