Coaxial to Optical - what should you use?

I would say it's *probably* just fine.

That being said... I'd probably suggest M-Audio's Co2 converter. If for no other reason, I have and have used several of them and never had the tiniest problem with any of them.

Just from looking at the pictures, the m-audio seems to be of better build quality. Are the inner components for these tools nowadays pretty much standard/the same?

You get what you pay for... so be careful...

It's an active device, so it's not just a pass through... the quality of the optical transmitter and lasor (LED) could be questionable on a low end converter. Now how much that would effect the quality of the audio... I'm not sure, but it's an extremely important link in your signal chain...
