hey im trying to do some simple recording of me on guitar along with singing. i dont wanna have to messs with much mixing im not going for really good quality at this point but i want it to sound good enough so you can actually enjoy the music when i burn it to cd. what kind of mic should i buy and what should i expect to pay? also, where can i buy it?

get a shure sm57. it's a mic you can use forever.

costs 80 bucks, great sound quality.

run that into your soundcards microphone input, get a simple multitrack recording program and record away.

do a track or two of you playing guitar..

and then sing over it.

you can mess with as much or as little mixing as you want. from just changing the volumes, to eq or dynamics processing.

hey aat - i got your IM but, I was away from the computer at the time.

The SM57 can be picked up at any music shop, Mars, Guitar center...or online for 79.99, that's basically a universal price on it, so you shouldn't have a hard time finding one.

I can't say enough great things about the mic, for its price and ease of use etc. etc.

Even though a lot of us get lost in condensor mics and there is nothing wrong with that, great things have been done, and will be done, with an sm57.

If you are on a really tight budget, I have heard you can get sm57s for around 50 bucks or so (they are virtually indestructable, so i wouldn't worry about used in terms of the quality). Not sure where to get used mics, maybe check ebay.
