what does everybody use for up close tom mics? getting nice results with 57 overheads but i want to try mic'ing the toms seperately.

I think the most common answer you'll hear on close micing toms is the 57's.

I have used the Audix D2 and D4. I've liked the fact that they are hypercardiod and got pretty good sounding results in less than ideal environments. I have a D6 that I usually use on kick for live stuff but have used it a couple of times on big floor toms.

A lot depends on what sound you are going for. That is the whole crux of microphone selection and placement. Think of it as palette, technique and style. What audio portrait are you trying to paint?

for some reason I prefer a condenser with pad on toms. I think with a 57 you sorta lose the mojo and tone. I dont like the sm7 on toms either.

Shure Beta 98's for me please - in most cases I prefer a nice clip on condenser to any dynamic.

Of course, there are times when you want your tom tracks to have a little less sheen - in which case I will reach for some ATM650's.

My favorite tom mic is the Sennheiser MD421. However I have used SM57's with no problems when it's a big kit and I run out of 421's.

I have also used AKG D330's D320's and D310's as tom mics with good results, I used to use these live (PA) as they are indestructible.

SM58's are good too.

My favorite tom mic is the Sennheiser MD421.
I would put these things on every percussion instrument in the world if I could, including strapping one to each shoe as I walk. It's like the mic is so damn awesome they had to fit it with the worst possible clip to even out the yin and yang.

My employer owns like a zillion of 'em. I own none. :(

has anyone tried the Sennheiser e604's?

The e604 is a poor mans 421, but not that poor. They have a very similar characteristic to the 421 and are physically much smaller and easier to position, and much cheaper. I have used them on a live concert recording where they were part of the PA system (we took a split from the PA) and they sounded good back at the studio when played back.

There is also a e904 which is apparently a better version if you can afford it.

We've been using Naiants on toms lately. They blow 57s out of the water in that regard.
