Everytime i record the bass i get clipping, im pluging the bass straight into the mixer and into the sound card, ive turn down the gain on the mixer down almost all the way..so much i can barly hear the bass and im still geting a liitle clipping. im using the delta 44 sound card, yamaha 12/4 mixer or something lkke that. im tracking on cool edit pro 2.0. i dont really like using mics to record the bass. is there a way to turn the gain up a bit so i can have a loud bass sound with out the clipping? any suggestions would be nice thanks ~Chris~

If the mixer doesnt have inputs that designate that they are DI (Direct In's) you will need to get a Direct In Box.

Are you sure it's "clipping"
Or is it that you're playing the bass too hard and are getting "clicking"
I have a Delta 44 and record at high input volumes and get no clipping.
Though if I play the bass too hard it does "pop" or "click"
That does resemble clipping.

yeah i might play the bass too hard but i cant slap otherwise itll pop, i have to use a pick almost....

You do need a DI box, you can't plug a bass or guitar, which needs a high impedance input, into a mixer which offers low impedance. That's your problem.

And compression... you will need compression on bass. Bass guitar *loves* compression.

If the bass has active electronics, this isn't a big problem. But the main problem is that you have to control your dynamics when you play.
