clipping compressor

I just got the dbx 266xl compressor, every time the copressor kicks in to attenuate the signal it makes a hight picthed clip sound--why? Is this a symptom of an internal power supply? help.
 
Try a fast attack and slow release with -10 threshold and a ratio of 3:1
 
generally, i use fast attack for vocals but the slow release speeds don't clear out of the way soon enough. It seems like it may be user error. When i did this with bass it wasn't a problem b/c of the nature of the bass part and also the playing was consistent. Also is this a symptom of a entry level product.
 
I was thinking it might be an artifact- too fast of attack, or just too much or too abrupt gain reduction.. I.e. ever heard a 'local TV news voice' that didn't pop like some badly recorded bongo drum?
 
Try dbx in 'Auto. There's at least a chance of being smoothish. But again, if you're hitting it too hard, all bets off.
