I'm wondering what kind maintenance schedule I should be following if I'm using my 4 track about once a week. Its a p.s. 246 and I need to know what to use, where, and where I can get it. Thank you tons.

Clean heads and pinch rollers. Tascam has it's own brand of cleaners. Don't use substitute cleaners. The wrong chemical will dissolve any plastic parts.

Also you'll want to degauss. Tascam manufactures a degausser. Degaussing is easy but dangerous. Follow and rehearse instructions to the letter.

Monk, take good care of your 246,It is in my opinion the best portastudio tascam ever made.A classic. You know what a tank it is,as mentioned before, use tascam cleaning products,Rubber cleaner RC-2 and head cleaner HC-2. and clean before you use it and after you use it. YOU CANNOT OVER CLEAN! Also you must degauss the heads.Do not touch the heads with the tip of the wand, pass over the heads slowly, and while the wand is still on,move at least 4 feet from the 246 before turning it off. the farther the better.VERY IMPORTANT,Do this with the 246 UNPLUGED!

also:
Hot Rocks, I say six feet to be even safer.

Also:

Keep any magnetically recorded media(tapes, dats, floppys, etc.) away from the wand.It will erase or distort them.

Keep mixdown decks or any other machines with magnetic recording heads, that you might have in your setup, unplugged and away from the wand.
