Hi, im doing a lot of songs that have lots of high gain, but cant seem to get the guitars to sound cleaner like on commercial albums. Is this something I can do to fix, or is it just because the playing and multi-tracking isnt as tight?

I also sometimes get this sort of "sheen" that seems to dampen the songs a little, is this a problem to fixed with eq or compression?

Without hearing it, I wouldn't be able to tell you if mastering would help. My guess is that it's the mix itself. I would muck around with the guitars to clean them up before I would start throwing EQ and compression on the entire mix.

You are really talking about a problem which should be addressed in a mix, not at mastering

And never a more truthful word was said.
