Cleaning music gear

I normally tend to vacume everything then after whipe it down with a rag with a little water and slight bit of soap sometimes to get of grime. What would you use to clean dust of a speaker cone? What would be safe?

I would carefully use a low power vac with a fabric attachment (the one with the long loose brissles sticking down).

Another option is to hold the vac a few inches away, and drive the speaker with some strong bass. That will sometimes make the dust fly off, and the vac will be there to catch it.

I bought my another pair of speakers used and something strange was used to clean the cone. It looks slightly brown from some residue. I tried cleaning it off with some water, then drying it with a towel and air drying. Is there anything safe to remove residue from a speaker cone?
