Hello everybody! I play a Gretsch Synchromatic electric and I want to get a nice 'bluesy' sound. What could possibly give me this sound? So far I just have it plugged into an m-audio preamp so any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Since I don't know if you have any mics, I won't say GET AN AMP, but I will say some type of modeler inbetween the guitar and Preamp would help.

Thanks! Yeah I kind of figured I'd need some kind of processor. I was just wondering if anybody new a good chain to run. I also have an akg2000b and a cheap dynamic, what kind of amp is good to mic? Thanks

Old open back fender amps seem to provide that "wet" blusey sound pretty well.

I would say any Fender will do you justice. ProJr is the cheapest tube. Plus a tube is the most popular means of getting the blues. Even a solidstate might work for you ..... just go play a couple.

600 at the most

Brand New Blues Jr. at $400 or a new HodRod Delux at about $550.

My personal choice.....a USED Deluxe Reverb. Should run about 5 bills.

If you go for a used amp, you might want to think about spending a little extra and replace the tubes at the same time. Problem with used tube amps is you never really know how old the tubes are. I've put tubes on meters that claim they still had 90% of their lives left, but replacing them anyway made a world of difference.

P.S. I would look for a used Fender Twin Reverb, or better yet a Fender Cyber Twin but I have yet to come across one for under $700. And by the way....mic it! I've yet to ever come across a guitar that was recorded direct and sounded anything even close to good.

You don't say whether volume is an issue. if you are trying to do this in the bedroom of your apartment, getting a good bluesy tone out of a Twin will piss off your neighbors before you can say 'McKinley Morganfield' - but on the plus side, the guys at the 7 11 down the street will be enjoying the groove!

In which case, I completely agree on the Deluxe reverb, or even smaller such as a Princeton Reverb.

I'm not a great fan of modelers such as the Pod or J-Station, but guys on this site have got pretty impressive results with them.

Foo makes some good points about volume. Guess I just assumed you were in a house and not an apartment. If volume is a problem then you might wanna stay clear of the twin. As far as the Pod and the Line6 amps, I'm not real impressed. However, the Fender Cyber Twin is really, really nice, and it has a direct out. (not to mention midi)

I use the following for clean sounds:
1. Evans FET 500 with JBL 15
2. Fender Vibrolux with two 10's
3. Peavey Classic 50-212

The Evans is the cleanest and is suitable for jazz. The Peavey is the most versatile. The Fender is my favorite though for the vibe and the sound.
