if you want a total rock bottom budget approach. lets assume you put a free recorder on your g4. and use the g4's built in A to D.
then you will still need a mic (suggest CAD gxl LDC - 50 bucks as an example), and mixer (suggest yamaha mg - 90 bucks).
this is about as rock bottom as it gets. ie..your investing 150 bucks around about. now some people ARE getting results with this that make them happy. but you might not. only way to know is to demo it.
rent a LDC mic and say a yamaha mixer....and see if your happy with the sound quality using the g4 built in A to D.
thats about as rock bottom as i can get it !!!!!!

all great thoughts

Thanks so much for the great feedback everyone. It certainly gives me a lot to kick around. I'm glad that I'm beginning the process early! This input will definately help me make a well informed decision, so thanks very much, I'll keep y'all posted!

Right now I'm leaning towards seeking professional help, with an ear toward learing as much about the process in the process, and if it seems like someting I might have a ear and head for I'll start acquiring equipment, keeping an eye out for deals a the while. Besides, an analog engineer who I'd hire to record on site might want just as much as buying the equipment! We'll see... like I originally said, if this is something that I could do, I'd ceratinaly do it more than once, so building a competent repertoire of studio equipment is definately something I'm now interested in.

So, post your classically (voice and piano) oriented reccomendations for preamps and mics now or forever keep yer peace! In the meantime I gotta go see about a Unicorn...

Ciao!

Phil in Wil
